Soy: Not so good for you?

posted 24th Aug
I'm not sure that this is really a debateable topic, but discussion would be welcome! I recently switched to a vegan diet and some one asked me what I ate. (Apparently there is nothing to eat if you aren't eating animal products...) Anyways, I metioned almond milk and the woman I was talking to said it was good that I drank almond milk instead of soy milk because soy is really bad for people. Soy is like America's new health super food, so I was surprised by her statement, but after looking into it a bit, I found that she's far from the only one that believes this. I find it very concerning considering soy is being pushed heavily as a 'good for you' food and that it's acommonly used milk alternative for infants. What do you think? What have you heard? Here are some articles:

I have heard this too, but I suppose I can only go off of my personal experience. I was the healthiest while I was a vegan. I had more energy, I didn't get sick, my skin looked awesome. And when I eat meat and dairyI'm sluggish, my hair and skin look like crap etc. So idk really, but after the baby I'm definitely going back to being Vegan.

Soy milk is very hard to digest, sadly when people can't have milk, they think soy milk is better. Too much soy for boys is bad, too much estrogen, and Rice milk and Hemp milk are just as good ^-^

Also, you think being a vegan is hard? Try being a RAW vegan LOL

It is being pushed in America as good for you .. I have noticed that America likes to keep pushing bad food on us. Healthy food is over priced yet you can buy any junk for $1.00. And in some europe country they are starting to tax sugar food items because they don't like the medical cost that a bad diet brings. That is amazing I'd love it if they would tax sugar drinks and what not. I can not stand how I can buy a soda cheaper than water... so annoying. America wants us all fat, lazy, and unhealthy so we don't think too much.

Eh.. I think everything in moderation.. Soy does contain phytoestrogens which mimic our own, that's why it's good for women going through menopause... I personally don't bother with much soy.. I have read a lot of articles about consuming TOO much, but some of those tend to be biased..

I do feel much better, but I eat hardly any soy. I don't like soy milk or tofu, and don't eat any of the processed 'meat' foods, so my soy consumption is very low.

In America, soy has a lot of estrogen in it...they have bred it that way so it would grow well without pesticides.

It just concerns me that millions of infants are drinking soy formula as their only nutritional intake.

I actually don't think being vegan is hard at all! I thought it would be, which is why it took me forever to make the switch, but it's been pleasantly easy. I looked into the raw food diet, and it's just too much planning for me. I don't even know what I'm going to have for dinner in 2 hours, so I definitely couldn't plan my meals for tomorrow, today. I'd say 50% of what I eat is raw anyways, I think it just comes with a vegan diet.

If you look at one of the links I posted, it talks about the history of China and soy and how they don't eat nearly as much soy as people would like us to think. They also don't have all the processed soy products that we have over here.
