Crying It Out

posted 24th Aug
What age do you think is the right time? And when did you do it with your babies?
With my daughter I never did it, eventually at 8 months old she started sleeping through the night. But that was only 4 months ago and now ive got another one coming in Dec. So ive decided I want to try it sooner with my son, otherwise i might go crazy. (Im a single mom)... So yeah...whats the right age???

with my first never let him cry it out til he ws 13months....man that was hard as hell but def worth it. wth my second i started a little sooner it really depends on the baby when they can self soothe.

So how soon was it with your second?

6 months is recommended for either CIO, Ferberizing, or other variations of self-soothing methods.

I just can't do crying it out or the Ferber method.

It's not for me and I'm not comfortable with it. At least I say so now when my daughter is 2 weeks shy of being 8 months old. If she has tantrum problems when she's over a year old, yes I'll try to discipline her, but anything of the sort on a child who's under a year old just doesn't seem right for me.

I know my daughter pretty well to be able to say if she's crying and I don't soothe her, she'll be completely hysterical, crying at the top of her lungs for I'm not sure how long, but generally she's very easy to soothe, a paci and song tend to do the trick.

So If you started that early, how long did the crying go on for?

DO NOT START THIS EARLY!

A baby this young doesn't comprehend that crying = attention. As a mother already, you know that babies this young only cry when they NEED something. They cry when they need to be fed or changed or even just to be comforted. In this time you're still building the trust!

Kel is our first and she will be 9 month in a couple days. We have been grappling with the CIO for about 2 months. She is a good self-soother tho....... its just this horrid teething crap that has us crazed. She wakes so much but we just help her rock her a little, sing a bit, offer her her cold chewy, give her tylenol when needed, teething tabs, rub her gums, lay her in her crib rub her back even if she is crying and tell her its ok and she will find her thumb in a few and soothe herself back down. She knows she never sleeps with us...... she has been in her own room in her crib from the day she came home.

If they can self-soothe themselves........ they can CIO....... it won't hurt them. They just need our reassurance.
We are expecting twins in April........ so all this will be tested again for us too.

putting baby to bed awake, give a pat, say g'night, and leave. Let baby cry 5 mins, return, reassure w/o picking up, leave. Let baby cry 10 mins & repeat. cry 15m repeat, etc...

Yeah thats def too early...i just looked up the ferber method everyone was mentioning and that guy says to start between 4-6 months...which makes sense, and still kind of seems early. But i know by that time, Ill be desperate! Lol.
