Breastfeeding Mamas

posted 23rd Aug
How long did your newborn nurse for and how often? I'm having to supplement 3 formula bottles a day because my little man has jaundice but he is eating breastmilk like crazy. I pump duringformula bottlesand get about 1 1/2 ounces per breast.. is that about right? Other than that, he eats straight from the breast. I feed him and then he falls asleep ( I try to keephim awake but that is a joke)and then I lay him down and 15 mins later he acts like hes starving and eats again.

Both my kids had jaundice and I didn't have to supplement. My daughter had it so bad she had to have 3 days of phototherapy treatment. Why did they tell you to supplement? You need the baby on the breast as much as possible to make more milk, in return, making more poopy and wet diapers to break down the bilirubin.

My daughter does the same thing when we nurse!!!!!!!! She eats, falls asleep, and five minutes after you lay her down she's up to eat more. She usually only does this once, though, takes each breast. She probably eats for a total of 45/50 minutes, Sometimes more.
What are his jaundice levels if you don't mind me asking?

When she was brand new Addison would nurse for.... ten minute "spurts" But she has ALWAYS been a piggy and Ive had to supplement with formula 1 or 2 times a day.

If your baby is still pretty young then it is normal. They cluster feed a lot in the beginning. Try to keep her on the breast as much as possible (even if you don't think he's getting anything) it helps stimulate your milk supply to keep up with him.   Good luck! It is exhausting in the beginning but around 2 months you feel like you are getting more time to yourself.

Oh, and as for him sleeping a lot, jaundiced babies are a little lazier. Try undressing him or tapping his feet to wake him. I feed him for 15 mins on one side and then change his diaper and the cold wipe helps wake him and he then eats for 15 mins on the other side. Sometimes longer.

And then that 3 month growth spurt kicks in and you feel like you are nursing every half an hour lol.

He isn't getting it FROM your breastmilk... your breastmilk is "keeping" him from expelling it!
My daughter went through the same thing... we just got done supplimenting for three days because she's a month over and her bilirubin levels still aren't down to where they should be (NOTHING!)
It didn't help much....
Breastfed babies naturally get jaundice worse and keep it for longer than formula fed babies....

ohhhhhh I see. My kids didn't have breastfeeding jaundice, but a close friend of mine had that issue with her son. Sadly she had to put him on formula because it just wouldn't go away no matter what she did. She was pretty sad because she was dead set on breastfeeding.

His level was 7 when we left the hospital n then we brought him back for his newborn dr appt and it was 16.7 and i didnt even realize he was yellow until the dr pointed it out. So he had me stop breastmilk for one night and pump and feed him formula and the next day his levels had dropped 2 pts so they told me do 2-3 formula bottles a day and we go back monday
