autism

I am wondering from parents with kids who have been diagnosed autistic, are there signs that as you think back told you in infancy that your child was autistic? I live in an area where alot of children are autistic and just want to know signs to look for at this young an age...everything I look at online is for older children.

Thanks for your help in advance...

I have a nephew who is and the telltale sign when he was an infant was his refusal to make eye contact with anyone.

the youngest i personallyhave heard a baby being dignosed is 6 months. i think the most extreme cases would sart early, like smiling, talking, babbleing, being social, etc. but it all depends on the child. not all children show signs, and i think the average age to be diagnosed is about 2 years old, but i am not certain. go to an autism website and it will prolly be able to give you some good info.

I heard they won't make eye contact and don't like to hug or cuddle. I think the cuddling thing is when they are older though.

Yeah there are some. Like not talking no babbling. My son well he was such a quite infant and turns out he wouldnt speak he is almost 5 and still can only speak 3 or 4 word sentences when he really tires other than that just one and two words at a time. My son smears poop on the wall i dunno if thats a sign but i trait. My son wasnt social either and he didnt like us to rearrange things. TO this day he will yell if we put something back where he knows it doesnt go. And sometimes temper tantrums arent really temper tantrums we have an issue with this. There isnt much really to go on untill they are 12-18 months old although we found out much later. We didnt see the signs and didnt reallly think he had it till someone told us that they thought he had it and they were a specail ed teacher it was one of my friends. I wouldnt be worried about it unless someone gives you a reason if there is delays in any kind of moter skill of any kind and im talk sever delays then i would worry if not that i wouldnt think about it too much you will make yourself worry for nothing.

Yeah, I see what your saying about making meyself worry so much, the reason I was thinking about it is we have so many kids in our area with it that I would rather catch it early then go too long. I have at least 3 clients whose children have autism (out of about 25) and that worries me that we have so many in this area. He is only almost 3 mo but I thought if it was something I watched for now I may be able to catch it early. He doesnt seem to really act at all like you all have described so I guess Ill just try not to wonder about it...easyer said than done, especially with all the coverage it gets...

Yeah we would have liked to catch it earlier but we caught the speach delay after he turned two the pedi was very conserned about him and he was our first child so we just didnt know. We didnt get the autism dignosis untill i pushed for them to test for it and he was barley 4 when we found out. I mean really you will know if your child is delayed pretty bad and if you get them into spe ed then that get really the only treatment they can. There isnt a whole lot you can do about autism. And trust me i know what you mean eaiser said than done. But my daughter is fine and my baby is almost 8 months and not really showing any signs i will keep watching him cause i know it runs more in boys than girls but i really dont think he will have it he babbles alot and he makes eye contact and he cuddles with me so i dont really see any of the signs that was another thing i think i forgot to mention you know how most kids will want to be rocked to sleep and what not well my oldest was not like this he didnt like to be held or rocked he just HAD to cry himself to sleep he wouldnt go to sleep any other way. And trust me if we worry about every thing our kids could get you wouldnt have a life dont worry about it keep an eye out for the signs cause autism was around for a long time its just getting more coverage now i belive because of that one chick whos a celb. Dont worry cause really if he does get it what can you do??
