Will the Real John McCain Stand Up?

posted 22nd Aug
I was raised in a democratic household and my views are primary democrat. However, prior to this election would have been comfortable with John McCain in the White House. The man always seemed to speak rationally and without bias. I really felt when he ran, the democrats would never have a chance to take back the White House. However, this new John McCain, the presidential nominee, is not someone that I recognize nor I can identify with. He is no longer the individualist and non-conformist I used to respect but he is more like a mere puppet blabbing on about whatever nonsense will please the Republican Party.

Recently he made a statement about how America is better off than it was eight years ago and he thinks that America has made great progress economically. What? Is this really John McCain talking? Plus, he is all of a sudden defending George Bush on policies he strongly opposed and even went as far as saying he supported President Bush on these policies more than 90% percent of time. (What???) From when does he defend George Bush? He has been the Bush administration’s biggest opponent whether it was on the war, the economy, abortion or education.

So what happened to the John McCain we I used to know and love? He was the most outspoken member in the Senate. He used to follow his heart and not the majority. The John McCain I see today has turned into a puppet for the Republican Party – that where he has gone.

I really would like to see the old John McCain make a come back but I am not sure I can vote for John McCain knowing that if he gets elected, there is a possibility he will merely follow as republican presidents have before him.

Will the real John McCain stand up?

I have no idea. I used to like McCain. I woudlnt have voted for him becuase we disagree on a lot, but I really respected him. i dont anymore. He has turned into another GOP puppet.

Sure, there is a chance he could be elected and go back to being "Maverick", but I really really doubt it.

I would like to see him go back to being the "Maverick" John McCain again but I am not sure he can pull that off before election day. I am worried about whether he will continue tobe a GOP puppet after he is in office.

Love the title. lol

I know what you mean. I used to have a great deal of respect for McCain, not because he was a POW or war vet, but because he used to tell it like it was. It's funny how now that he has his little "Straight Talk Express"; he doesn't 'straight talk' anymore. And his position changes too frequently the past few years. One moment he's comdemning Bush's actions, the next he's his little puppet. You would think with Bush's growing unpopularity, the smart move politically would be to distance yourself more from the train wreck. *shrugs*

He's not the only candidate I'm disappointed in, but I agree, I miss the Old McCain. Don't give in to senility, McCain.

This is what I'm saying!

I used to respect John McCain. I liked that he had values and stood by them. He wants so badly to get elected that he's lost track of why people liked him in the first place.

If McCain's the puppet, Bush is the ventriloquist with his hand up McCain's ass.

I guess he's a puppet's puppet. There's no way Bushie was pullin the strings. Though how Cheney and Rove could both fit their hands up there, I'll never know.

Poor McCain... even our hard-core Republican friends are sitting this one out, I guess. I had hoped there'd be at least a little friction to base a discussion on.
I suppose there's really not much to discuss... you can't really argue that McCain's a spring chicken.

There's nothing to discuss because the OP hasn't provided anything to discuss. She's merely given her opinion and hasn't provided any fact to support what she said.

How can I argue with her opinion?

ok then, let me ask you this:
How do you feel about McCain being the leader of the Republican party? Not in terms of McCain vs Obama... more in terms of dedication to the moral fabric of the Party. Do you feel like he's being genuine when he says things like, "I'm pro-life"?

No, I don't feel like McCain is a true Republican with conservative values. But I never have. Has he changed his stance on being pro-life? Because as far as I know, he's always been pro-life.

I didn't feel that he was a good candidate from the start for the Republican party, but he is what we're stuck with. I just don't see where this is coming from because 1. I haven't seen him change any of his core values and 2. Why would he pander to George Bush? In case you haven't noticed, Bush isn't very well liked. The people who still like Bush are the people who are going to vote for McCain, no problem.

The OP is merely stating her opinion and hasn't provided any reason for her to think that. I could spout off about how much I don't like Obama, but it would still just be my opinion, and until the OP provides some evidence as to why she thinks McCain is being two faced, then her rant is simply the same old liberal rhetoric that carries no real meaning.

I certainly can't speak for the op, but I thought the topic we were discussing is the difference between McCain today and the McCain of 8 years ago (give or take)

I didn't necessarily see this as a McCain-bashing thread(if any felt it was), more like a nostalgic thread questioning what exactly happened that made McCain change. Or perhaps to debate whether he actually has changed, and what specifically.

You're right there isn't any fact to back this up in the post, but it's not exactly a new development for people to debate only their opinions. And I'd prefer her to just state her own opinion,, rather than post a propagandist video citing it as fact. (not that those are the only options) But I do see where you are coming from.

Even so, I'm glad it was posted. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who misses the McCain of the past.
