SA????

posted 22nd Aug
My DH is obsessed with wanting to get a SA, he thinks it is his "fault" we are not PG yet.
Anyway I don't even know where you would get this test done, is it through a fertility specialist or can he just go to a urologist?  Or do you just go to the lab?  I seriously have no idea.

Honestly I don't want him to get the test done, I just feel we haven't been TTC for all that long and if it comes back not so hot, it will just be another obstacle we have to over come, I think I would rather just not know at this time.

I went to my regular family doctor when we needed help and he just told me to get an ovulation kit, take prenatals, and keep trying.  It eventually worked!!

ok, he needs to relax. You've only been ttc since june. when my SA gave a sample it was through my ob-gyn. Normally most doctors don't start testing until ttc for a year or so. good luck to you.

I know that is what I keep telling him.  But in his defense 3 of our family members had babies within the last year and they all tried for like a day or didn't try at all.  He is a guy and he didn't pay attention to any of this stuff before we started trying so he is going on what he has seen.  I show him the average that it take a year to conceive, but he still wants to do it! He is crazy

Most Drs want you to try for a year before the do additional testing. What they would tell you right now is probablly to chart you cycles, use OPK's, and that it takes couples of normal fertility an average of 6 months to concieve.

I told him that too.  We stopped using contraceptives in January, so we add that into our "fertile times"  but I started charting in July and had some testing done in July after my cycle became irregular.  But when speaking with my OBGYN he said he wants to start me on Clomid in a couple of months if we are not PG, so I'm guessing my MD is starting our TTC since January.

I think i may have started the whole "Fault" talk in our house, when I became irregular, but I never expected him to get so involved and actually wanting to be tested!!

How much charting do you do? Just dates and CM or do you chart temps too?

You have to do what you feel best, but just so you know infertility is equally on the part of the man and woman. Knowing if he has a low count is not another obstical but a chance to improve your odds. If you are already charting then he can "save" up for your best day. From what I understand it is very inexpensive compared to female testing and also very easy. It would be very frustrating to me taking clomid and not knowing if he a reasonable shot at catching the egg. Of course, you need to get your cycle regulated but unless you've been able to identify any other problems through charting (short lueatal phase, early mc for example) I would be reluctant to do more invasive testing or treatments before I ruled that out.

Oh, in the mean time, if you don't want to do testing right now and he's concerned he can do some things to improve his swimmers. Wearing boxers instead of briefs, avoid masturbating and abstain a few days before your fertility window opens and only bd every other day, avoid hot tubs or prolonged exposure to heat. Look into some other ways to increase quantity/ quality, I'm not sure of all of them.
