traveling

posted 22nd Aug
ok, so I haven't had my child yet. I'm due october first. But in May of 2009 my whole family is traveling down to Colorado for a family vacation. It's about an 8 hour drive, and by may, Dre will be 8 months closer to 9 though. Is that too early of an age to travel that far? Or am I just a worry wart? How old where your kids when you took them on long trips? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

I haven't taken a long trip with my kids but friends of ours did it all the time and would always drive overnight so the kids slept the whole way.

My first child road 15 hours (we did make stops) from Kentucky to Florida 3 times in her first year of life. You would be surprised how easy baby does on trips. The car is always a crasher for my kids. My biggest is 10 and STILL falls asleep on long road trips ie those more than 3 hours. So far we've made 2 9 hour trips to see family and my youngest (Mason turns 6 months today) has done wonderful.

I would say don't be a worry wart but its always easier said than done. Good luck though.

we took bradley to deleware about 2 hour trip a few times to see his cousin. Some things I've found helpful: Pack like you are going away for a month. Bring tons of diapers/wipes and cloths, formula that will be easily excessable. Make sure you bring thier favorite stuffed animal and a small toy they like. It makes a world of a diffrence. And just plan on making extra stops for feedings and diaper changes. Bradley was 1 month when I took him on his first "road trip"
Oh also since you dont know the water conditions in other places bring a few jugs of Nursery water or bring some bottled waters to make the formula with.(this is just something I do personally because I dont like tap water, and dont want to give it to my son)

I think it would be just fine as long as your baby's health is good at the time. I know what you mean though,we plan to fly to N Ireland and Spain Dec 2009 to visit family and our baby will be right at a year old then and I am already worrying! Mostly cause the flight. You know how people can get when a baby cries in flight. Ugh....Anyway, I say go for it.

My parents live 8 hours from me and we have gone down there 4 times and Kevin is 7 months. You just have to be prepared to stop when you need to and have lots of toys to entertain you baby with.

Thats a long way!!! i think people should be more understanding when babies are on flights! I know everytime i fly my ears kill me and I always get a headache. I can only imagaine how a little babies ears would feel! Good luck with your trip though!

The ears....yes that's a worry too. My husband is from Ireland and also has family in Spain so that's why we're going. He has Aunt's and Uncle's that are getting up there in age and he wants them to see the baby.
You be careful on your trip too!
