They need to be rear facing for their own safety.

My little man is over 20lbs, but still has to be rear facing.

It's actually a law.

Do you realize how unsafe it is to have an 8 month old baby forward facing? Also, I believe it's the LAW that they have to remain rear facing when they are a year old AND 20 lbs. Not one or the other. If you were rear ended, your kids could be internally decapiated because their neck and spine is still so under-developed. You should read what the AAP recommends in regards to car seat safety - http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;109/3/550

And on top of you having them sitting forward facing to early you have them in booster seats which are usually for children who weigh 30 lbs or more. YOUR KIDS ARE NOT SAFE IN THOSE CAR SEATS!!

My son is 20 months and still sits rear facing in a convertible car seat. He will ride rear facing until he hits the maximum weight for rear facing in his car seat which is 33 lbs, he's currently 23 lbs.

I hope you would buy your kids the correct car seats ASAP and put them rear facing for their SAFETY!

Okay, this nice post of the gorgeous girls seems to be going downhill!!!! They are beautiful and getting so big!! I also immediately thought the thing about the car seats when I saw them. I'm from York too (as you know) and it really is the law. I begged my doctor to let me turn Riley's seat around (he was 20 pounds at his 6 month check) and she said absolutely not, you'll be fined if you get pulled over. I'm not going to go ape shit and preach to you, just trying to help you out girl. Check into it, because a fine for that could cost a pretty penny, let alone X2!!!!

Gorgeous girls! I have a good site to look at on rear facing and extended rear facing. Everyone else already said what I was going to say, so just look here:
http://www.car-safety.org/rearface.html
If you need good, inexpensive seats in the meantime, a Cosco Scenera is a great choice, they are under $50 at Walmart, Target and Kmart. It rear faces to 35 pounds, and forward to 40. They have a really cute pink print as well. I've heard some people say the seat looks cheap, but just remember all seats sold in the US HAVE to pass the same testing. The safest seat is one that fits your car, is installed properly and used properly every time. If you have any other questions, please feel free to pm me!
ETA:
Doctors do not always keep up on the latest car seat recommendations, they already have so much new medical stuff to learn, it kind of slips through the cracks so to speak, and they use older info. You can find a Certified child passenger safety technician in your area here:
