Drinking Age Limit

posted 21st Aug
Here in BC Canada, the drinking age is 19 years old. Alberta Canada is 18. I know the states is 21.
Basically my question is this, do yout hink the drinking age limit should be lowered to 18 years of age in North America (canada included). Why or why not.

Currently there is a proposed bill or at least talk of that at least 100 of the countries top 100 colleges are backing to lower the age limit to 18. I think if you are old enough to go out and die for your country you should be able to have a drink.

Another part of the debate I believe is the whole 21 and 21 shots, it's very dangerous. I'm not sure if lowering it will help or make things worse, but I am for it. If they are going allow you to sign up for the arm forces have a drink or raise the service age to 21.

Here in Tennessee it doesn't matter what the legal age is....50% of kids 13+ and 75%+ for 16+ do it....

I don't really care....whether they lower it or not, it will never matter to me.

i think thats most kids anywhere but they cant go into clubs or bars.. well clubs or bars that care that is. Here we dont have alcohol sold at the corner store so it is harder to buy it (without someones help) when your underage. We have a place called LCBO and the Beer store, so its not as accessable. I know when I did turn of age I drank more becasue it was so much easier to get

Yes and No.
Pros (well actually not really pros just arguments helping the lowering of drinking age)\

1. When they raised the drinking age, there was no real change in the amount of drinking and driving.

2. Also when they raised the drinking age, the rise in underage drinking rose (duh! they raised it 3 years that's more years of children that would like to drink and do drink)

Cons
1. First off most 18 year olds are still in high school. I know they already get alcohol, but if an 18 year old were to be able to get alcohol i feel drinking would start at a younger age more frequently.

2. They change it now after 20 something years, there would be a lot of abuse with alcohol and driving.

3. They are supposed to be changing the driving age to 18, so what are we going to give 18 year old the right to drive and drink at the same age. Disaster waiting to happen.

Very true. I had a hard time finding someone to buy for me underage. I always managed too but it was difficult.

The only reason i dont think it should be lowered is because too many people are irresponsible and go out and are completely stupid... but i cant really say much.. i know i've done it.. i just didnt drive.. thats dumb. Its not gonna matter if they lower the drinking age or not.. people are gonna find ways to get they're hands on it if they want it bad enough.. its definitely not hard.

I read somthing somewhere that says the brain doesnt stop growing until about 18 years of age. consuming booze makes the brain not grow to its normal capacity. I think the drinking age should be 19. I feel 21 is high. Drinking and driving will never stop as I know plenty of 50 year old men and women that still do it. I personally think that teens and young adults are smarter these days and wiser about drinking choices! (some that is)

Part of me says, lower it to 18, remove it altogether, I could care less. MIP citations mean absolutely nothing anyhow. The world laughs at them.

But increase police presence looking for DUIs (especially around the colleges that are supporting this so hardcore) instead of sending them out on noise complaints or crashing college parties checking IDs.

And they should also consider merely driving away from a bar or college party should be considered probable cause and not an infringement of privacy to stop someone to give them a breathalyzer.

My brother was 3 years older. When he was 19 I was 16. He would NEVER buy it for me, totally not for his little sister drinking, but his friends liked me and would. Ha. I never asked strangers.
My mom was also ok with my drinking. Not so much at 16 but 17 and 18 she would buy it for me with the intention that I would call for a ride or walk home. We lived on an isolated part of the sunshie coast with the population f 11,000 people. Walking home is safe!!
