Missing vein in umbilical cord! Any other moms???

posted 21st Aug
Okay, I just got back from my 24 week appointment and when they did an ultrasound to confirm the umbilical cord has the little artery and two large veins, they found out my little boy's cord only has one vein and one artery. So it's missing one of the veins. My Dr. is giving me a referral to a specialist for a more detailed US to see if there will be any birth defects.

I just found out so I'm freaking out a little, but trying hard to keep things in perspective. Any other moms out there who has/had a pregnancy with just one vein and one artery? What was the outcome? Anything will help.

Thanks!

I don't know the answer really (the only thing I know is that another ladies baby did have it and did have a birth defect)

but I'm wishing you good luck and I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Wow...do you know what the birth defect was? I was so shocked when the doctor told me that I didn't have enough time to think of questions to ask like what type of birth defects, etc. I was just so shocked.

So I did some research and it seems like we have a 50% - 67% chance that our baby will be born with no defects at all. I'm so nervous right now! The specialist is suppose to call me this morning to schedule me an US appt. Hopefully they will have a cancellation or something so I can get in ASAP. This has been so hard.

I also read that only 1 in 100 births have this single umbilical artery thing....so we're in that 1% ....so maybe there aren't that many moms out there who has experienced this as well? If there are any, please PM me or something....I would love to talk to you.

Here's to trying to stay calm....

I found out that I also have a 2-vessel cord last week at my 22wk apptmt. The doctor seemed pretty calm in telling me that it isn't uncommon and he hasn't seen any babies born with a defect from the 2-vessel cord. But I also was referred to a specialist to get it checked out. My apointment is on Sept 2nd. He did say if anything will be wrong, it would prob. be underdeveloped kidneys and that can be fixed w/ meds or on its own w/ time. Plus he said my baby's heartbeat, fluid & size looked great which are all good signs. So I have stayed calm...there isn't anything we can do so there is not point in stressing over it, right? Keep me udated though...and I'll let you know how everything turns out on my end...no worries!!!

Oh that's so nice to hear. My Dr. made me worry a little bit more. Your Dr seemed a little more reassuring.

I just got back from the specialist (they were able to fit me in last minute yay!) and they didn't see anything else that is considered abnormal besides the two vessel cord. He is giving me a referral to go to their main campus where they have better equipment to do a more detail observation of the heart, but he said that the heart looks great to him...so I am so relieved knowing that there's a huge chance he'll be perfectly healthy. And I'm sure your baby will be too. The specialist said it's pretty common (2 vessel cord) so I think we'll both have very healthy babies in the end.

Thanks to everyone who kept me in their thoughts!

That is great! And I'm jealous...they couldn't fit me in until Sept. 2nd (3wks after I found out about the cord!)...so I still have anther wk and a half to think about it. But like I said, I'm not stressin'- TOO much! I'm trying to think about the positives; at least I will have a bunch of ultrasounds so I can see her a few more times before she's born!

That's awesome news! I am just you're feeling more relieved. Good luck at your next appointment and good luck to you too Amanda!
