cord blood question
posted 21st Aug
i kno that u can bank your baby's cord blood. but is the blood only useful for your family? or can it be used by other families? im asking cuz i wouldnt mind banking it but it just costs too much money. so i guess i was wondering that if other families are able to use it...is it possible to just donate it...?

yes you can donate your cord blood. They actually take the placenta and everything, there's lots of valuable cells in there. I donated Megan's. It's lots of paperwork, which I had to fill out twice, but it's worth it in my opinion. And if something happens with one of your family members and you need it, you get first dibbs if they haven't used it yet. (here at least)

sorry... just really read the question. If you want to donate it, then by all means, go for it. But I would never pay to have it stored for "just in case".

i would pay to store it just in case.. having a preemie makes you think of things alot differently.

If it would have worked out for us financially I would have banked Megan's. Too bad too, b/c once we donated it, we had several cord bank workers come into my room and thank me for the donation b/c it was enough units in Megan's placenta to help an adult which is rare from one donation. Guess I fed her well, huh?
