Has anyone Donated Breastmilk?

posted 21st Aug
I was waiting at the Doctor's office today, and I was reading a magazine article about donating breast milk. I heard of it when I had my first son, and I thought about trying it because I saw this episode on Oprah I think about women in Africa who can't breast feed there children, and theres women in the USA that donate there breastmilk to help keep the babies in Africa alive. Anyways... this article I was reading was about donating breastmilk to famlies that adopt babies. I think it's a great idea to help babies that are suffering, and I think I want to try it... but does it seem weird to donate your breastmilk? Idk... it seems kinda controversial. What do you ladies think? Should breast milk be exclusevely for your child? Or is it ok to share breast milk with parents that are not capable of providing there own milk? Or would you rather help desperate mothers in need in other countries?

I think it's an awesome thing to do. I wish that I would've been in the mindframe to think about it after I lost my son last year. I think I would've felt really good donating, for any cause. I think donating it to other countries is awesome, because a lot of those babies really need the health benefits of breast milk...

Cow's donate their milk all the time & that isn't even made for humans!

I don't think it would be controversial unless the donater did drugs or something.. but I'm pretty sure they'd test you.

I've read about it and considered it myself. I read that they use it for babies in NICU as well. I'm watching to see what people say...

i never had milk when i had my daughter she went straight onto formula.. i think it would have been fantastic if i could have somehow had a donor so she could have receaved the benifits of something i couldnt give her.

also i know that some women have major amounts of excess milk that just gets wasted b/cus there is just to much for their baby to get through...to donate it to a needy baby would be a wonderfull thing.

I think it's better than what some people do--Which is pay someone else to physically breastfeed their child (I think that's kind of disturbing). I'm not really sure how I feel about donating breast milk, though... I think it's because I have person boundary issues and am one of those people who considers it "mine for mine only." But it would definitely benefit the babies and their families, so it can't be bad... Sorry--Sort of in the gray on this one. =\

That's the thing... some companies don't test anything... isn't that kind of scary? I'm looking at the website called www.breastmilkproject.org, and it says that they do a one time blood test to make sure you are healthy, and then when you start sending your breastmilk they test for the 5 most commen abused drugs... and then 75% is donated to babies in the US and 25% goes to Africa.

That mean's it's tested.

I think it would be fine.

Wow I never knew you could do that. And If I can when I give birth that's something that I will defenetally look into. I don't think it's wrong to do it.
