Late Language Explosion?

posted 20th Aug
Hi! I am new here--mom of a near-4-year-old and a near-2-year-old (and another one in April). I think I am driving myself nuts, but here goes . . .

My daughter (nearly four) seemed like she was chattering out of the womb. My son, who is nearly two, will occasionally speak in two-word phrases "C.J. did it," "I did it," etc. and says "Mama," "Dada," etc. He's never been a pointer, but I asked my pediatrician, who said he didn't demonstrate any signs of autism. He makes excellent eye contact, plays AND fights with his sister (ring around the rosey, tag, etc.) and runs to the door the minute my husband gets home every day. He loves other kids and will respond to choices (lay on the couch OR go to bed). Everyone says, "Boys talk later," "Second children talk later," etc., but do I have a reason to be really worried? Did anyone have a toddler with a later language explosion? He's very social (says hi and bye at the grocery store and with his friends and grandparents), so I truly don't think it's autism . . . Any thoughts/reassurance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I also have a 4 year old and a two year old, and have the same issue. My 4 year olds last pedi(who was an absolute jerk and incompetant) claimed without ever speaking to either of them that it was because my eldest talked for my 2 year old. That is and was not the case, and if anything my 4 year old helps my youngest by making her repeat and articulate words(she spoke very clearly in full sentences by 2 years old) instead of enabling her to talk inaudible words. So I finally asked their new doc if I could get her evaluated at a speech center and he is setting it up.I am also not worried about any social or hearing problems, I just wondered if it was just a pallette problem with her? However my point is that it never hurts to get them help, and apparently the earlier the better.

Thanks! I love my doc, but my 2-year appt. is coming up at the end of September, and I intend to ask him about speech work. From what I gather, a speech delay can be typical and sometimes easily rectified (as you said, the sooner the better). Naturally, months ago, I freaked about autism, as that is so much in the news. But I would find it hard to believe that that is the case, given his level of social interaction and love and excitement around other children. Anyways, thanks for the input!

No problem, and welcome btw.I will let you know what they say at her assessment but unfortunately it may take a couple of months for us to get in.I will certainly be busy then, but better her speak more clearly than have a negative effect on the next one.Good luck to you!
