percent effaced?

i thought i paid great attention in birthing class, but i must of been in the bathroom when she was talking about percentage effaced and all that stuff, because when people makeposts about it, i dont understand. will someone explain it for me?

I was told to think of it as pulling a turtle neck over your head. Before you put it on the top is thick and closed as you pull it over your head it becomes thinner and opens wider. The thinning refers to effacement the opening up refers to dialation. Hope this helps....

effacement is a % of how much your cervix is shortening and dialation is how big it is getting/spreading apart..
