Birth Control, but no health insurance?
posted 20th Aug
Hey ladies didn't know where to post this but my best friend has no health insurance and has never even been to an OB/GYN but would really like to be on a birth control pill..
My question to you ladies (especially ones who've been in this situation) would somewhere like planned parenthood offer birth control for those people who don't have health insurance or how would one go about getting it??
Thanks ladies!!

I know they do for minors. I got my birth control from there without insurance for free from age 15-18. I had my own insurance after 18. I've heard of someone going there for a Pregnancy test (she's 25) and they charged her. I'm sure you still could get the BC but may have to pay.

they should cover it if she makes under their income limit per month and/or has no insurance.

Yes they do offer birth control. You have to go into Planned Parenthood and have a pap smear... or when I didn't have insurace, I went for my annual exam ( yeah, I had to pay for it with no insurance which sucked), but they gave me samples of birth control for 8 months. Most Dr.'s have a lot of samples they are willing to give to anyone who needs help!

It was only like $6 a month for my pills from planned parenthood, but that was a few years ago.

How old is she? My friend always got her birth control through planned parenthood from 15-18 and it was free. She also got yearly checkups but once she turned 18 years old she had to start paying but it wasnt as much as if she would have gone somewhere else.

I use to be a receptionist at planned parenthood. They work on a sliding scale meaning they look at your income and charge accordingly. They will give her a pack with just a nurse visit but she will have to have an pap and exam for them to give her more. She will have to get her pills through them, unless you have some state program like New yorks family planning benefit plan. Tell her to give them a call they were created to help ladies in her exact situation be able to afford to control their family planning.

from 17-23 I did the "Take Charge" program through Planned Parenthood...covered all of my sexual heath stuff and got free birth control for a year...you qualify for that stuff depending on income...I don't know if it's offered everywhere, but we have it in Seattle.

Yes, PP gives free exams and BC. In my state, it's any age I think.

Look up Family Planning clinics in your state.
Edit to add
A family planning clinic is a special clinic that offers services such as birth control, pregnancy tests, yearly exams for men and women, counseling about pregnancy, adoption and abortion, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening including HIV tests. At Public Health, our expert medical staff provides services to all people, regardless of age, sexual orientation, or ability to pay.

Just call in and some do it without an exam. It's really cheap there too! I had a perscription I had at walgreens and it was 30 a month. For the same birth control I am now only paying 16 at planned parenthood!!
