Melatonin during pregnancy?

posted 20th Aug '08
I've been having problems sleeping while being pregnant and I used to take "Melatonin" which is a hormone that helps regulate sleep. It also appears to influence other hormones in the body. Melatonin supplements have become popular as natural sleep aids. I was wondering if anyone out there has taken it while pregnant and is it safe? I know I could just ask my doctor but every time I call his office I speak to his nurse and he never phones me back. Just wondering if anyone has taken it to help sleep while pregnant and if it's safe...thanks y'all!!

I took it during my pregnancy and I figure it's safer than Tylenol PM and you can take that while pregnant so.. that's what I did

Thanks so much! I haven't taken Tylenol PM to help me sleep either because again I called the doctor and he never returned my call so I figured Melatonin would be safer..

When it comes to pregnancy, however, natural does not necessarily mean safer. Although melatonin is indeed “natural” and is normally produced by the body, the amount delivered by various over-the-counter preparations typically exceeds the quantities normally produced by the body. As is the case with most supplements, we know very little about the impact these high levels of hormones may have on the developing fetus. Thus, we typically advise women with sleep problems to use medications with a better characterized reproductive safety profile.

"Just saying what I have read" Im sure you can take it you just dont want to exceed certain levels.

It seems to not be well studied because there is no money making possibility.; This article seems like good information.

Reproductive Toxicoloy 2008 Apr;25(3):291-303. Epub 2008 Apr 1.

It is advisable to use the smallest effective amount if you take it. Try 1/4 of a 1 mg tablet instead of a 3 mg tablet.

has anyone taken care to read the back of the melatonin bottle? it clearly states that you are not supposed to take it while pregnant...sooo i wouldn't do it personally, but its your choice...and from what i've seen from our healthcare system doctors cannot always be trusted...just the other day my friends doctor prescribed her a pain medication she was allergic to and has been for years under his care, the pharmacist caught it last minute and it could have killed her...her doctor knew she was allergic but prescribed it anyway...
but alas...i'm straying...the melatonin bottle says not to take it if your pregnant...other than that its up to you...good luck
