inconclusive HIV test

Hey everyone I was wondering if any of you guys ever came up with an inconclusive HIV test? Iam worried and confused about mine, and dont even really know what it means. I got tested 6 months before I got preggers and it came out negative then I got tested again and it came out inconclusive then my doc wanted to test me again and told me the results were fine and to wait another 6 months and get tested again. Well now I am waiting on my results...

I got an inconclusive with the saliva test, but the blood test later was -. Its a fickle test, I wouldn't worry.

Do you know if they did an ELISA or a Western Blot? They both are test for HIV but are done in different ways.

Q. What does one do if a test result is "indeterminate?" What causes this?

A. The term "indeterminate" relative to HIV testing usually refers to the HIV antibody Western blot assay. The HIV antibody Western blot assay is used on two or more specimens found to be reactive by an HIV antibody EIA screening assay. (6) Persons who are not at high risk for HIV infection and do not have symptoms, and yet continue to test indeterminate, usually have a very low probability of being infected with HIV. (7) There are many possible reasons for an indeterminate HIV antibody Western blot assay. Some of these reasons might be:
Prior blood transfusions, even with non-HIV-1 infected blood

Prior or current infection with syphilis.

Prior or current infection with malaria parasites.

Autoimmune disease (e.g. diabetes, Grave's disease, etc.).

Infection with other human retroviruses (e.g., HIV-2, HTLV I/II).

Association with "large animals." Animal trainers and veterinarians are sometimes exposed to viruses which do not cause human disease but may interfere with HIV antibody tests.

Second or subsequent pregnancies in women.



This is your second pregnancy, isn't it?, so maybe that's all it is.

That is scary! But maybe something just went wrong with the test itself. Like, maybe the messed up in the lab. It happens. I know HIV can take up to 6 months to show up on a test, at least that's what I've been told in the past. But if your doctor said to wait 6 months I wouldn't really worry about it much. If your doctor was really worried about it, he would have retested you immediately. At least IMO. Don't stress too much and good luck.

Inconclusive and indeterminate are different though.

I took an HIV test in June which came back negative. Recently I started a new relationship and after two espisodes of the condom busting we both decided to get tested. His test came back unconclusive. What does this mean? He has to take the test again in 90 days.

The term "indeterminate" is used more commonly. An indeterminate test means that your partner probably had one or more reactive ELISA tests. Whenever this happens the ELISA's are then confirmed with a Western blot test. As you see in the diagram below, the different results of a Western Blot depend on the lab technician's interpretation of how visible the bands corresponding to each HIV antibody are.

I am not sure which test they did, I guess I should have asked. With all of the tests Itook they were blood tests. I honestly was not worried about before but now I am terrified. I am going to have two children, I am a single mom I can not afford to be sick I need to be around for them. "sigh"

Well, do you have any serious reason to believe you COULD have it? Do any of your past partners have it or have sketchy backgrounds or anything?

Well I dont use drugs but two of my past partners were ex drug users and I one was pretty premiscuos (spelling)I was always careful about getting tested but who knows how honest everyone is these days, which is sad. I am really upset I keep thinking if I am sick then thats what I get for being irresponisble in my past. =(

I meant one partner was pretty promiscuos

Aww. Don;t beat yoursef up about it. Especially not until you get tested again. Everyone makes mistakes. Just learn a lesson and try to be more careful in the future.
