Other sleep options other than the cry it out method!

posted 19th Aug
I NEED to get my 14 month old sleeping through the night however I'm not a big believe in the "cry it out" method because first off it breaks my heart and I don't like seeing him standing up in his crib, tears/boggies running down his face... or if he cries long enough vomit on him. I just don't like this method and don't think he's a way to show him security. What are other methods to try??? I'm due in 2 months w/baby #2 so I HAVE to get him sleeping through the night by then!!!!!!!!!!!

What you can do is sit in the room with him as he crys but DO NOT get up and comfort him. You can say I am here, lie down, slowly moving your chair closer to the door each night and in the hallway then not at all in the room with him or in sight anymore.

I did not like the whole cry it out thing but the thing with my son was he was waking up to breast feed and he did not breast feed during the day so I had to break him off that and he did not know how to fall asleep on his own beacuse dumb me always nursed him to sleep. I tried everything but the only thing that worked in the end was the cry it out. it only took three nights of doing it and he was sleeping thro the night . It was very very hard. but it was the only thing that worked

Thank you so much! I heard his pic might be on a website of commonly stolen baby pics that people try to pass off as their own kid! hahaha...I would love to see that....but idk what the site is.

consistancy. Establish a bedtime routine and in no time they will know when bedtime is and their body will actually start to get sleepy at that time every night.

from your personal experience...how elaborate does the bedtime routine need to be?

I don't like washing Darwin every day...at 5 months, he doesn't get dirty enough to warrant it yet!

I wash Piper every Sunday and Weds unless she needs it.

Here's Elliot's bedtime routine. Yes, I realize his BT is pretty late for a nearly 4 year old but, it fits our schedule and he generally gets plenty of sleep as long as something doesn't throw a wrench in things so, please don't go "oh my god he goes to bed at 10?!?!?!

we eat about 8pm. this gives everyone time to get home and relax a bit
Elliot and daddy will then either play lego's or watch a movie until somewhere between 9-9:30. this all depends on elliot's mood. If he's cranky, it's a good indication he needs to go to bed. 9-9:30 is bath time. I let him have a good amount of play time because, this is his last chance to get his sillies out (if you knew elliot you'd understand) by 10:00 his teeth are brushed, he's in bed and we're reading a story. He gets up at 6:30am so, we try to get him at least 8 hours of sleep. He goes to daycare and between 12-2 he has nap time so, it's not like he goes all day w/out one

As long as you do the same thing every night at the same time, it's good enough.
If you don't want to give a bath every night, make sure story time is at the exact same time every night.

lol...Darwin has no bedtime at the moment...he usually falls asleep b't 9:30 and 11:30 though. I haven't pushed a routine since he won't be 5 months until the 24th...just 5 days away.

I think reading would be a futile exercise at this age...he's too interested in doing rather than sitting still. But thank you for sharing...as he gets older I'll incorporate some of those things I'm sure.

Hi. My 14 month old wakes up sometimes once at night. It could be for several reasons. I listen to him on the monitor. It could be to he bumped his head on the side of the crib, he is twisted in his blanket or maybe a bad dream. I tend to do the following: I never let him cry, ever. It is mean to me because he is still my baby. I go in the room and hold him and rock him to calm him down. He usually goes to sleep in my arms. Depending on how late it is and how tired I am, I am take him in the room with me and his daddy will hold him and that makes him happy and he passes out, and I put him back in his room (sometimes or sleeps with us). I also try rocking him in his room on the rocking chair. That too works but takes a long time and he might wake up when I put him back and have to start over again. Basically it takes a lot of patience and willingness to give up some sleep, which I have. I refuse to breastfeed which if that whats he wants he cries but he soon gets over it if I continually rock him.

Hope this helps you, I believe that this is all a phase and will pass with age. My little one doesn't wake up every night but about once a night maybe 3 time a week. I don't think that is too bad. Besides I am up every hour checking on him anyway. =)
