re: Other sleep options other than the cry it out method!

posted 20th Aug
There could be many reasons why a child who is 14 months is waking up at night. The biggest is probably that he is getting teeth, the 2nd most common is that he is learning new things developmentally (which includes separation anxiety).

I totally recommend the "No Cry Sleep Solution". I have never read it (oops!) but know many many many mamas who have and really enjoyed its message.

My 23 month old sleeps in bed with us and if he wakes at night he nurses for maybe a minute and then falls back asleep, and if that doesnt work my DH takes him and walks with him for a few minutes and that does the trick. My older 2 followed this same pattern and now sleep through the night just fine.

I recommend and used with all 3 of my kids, the Baby Whisperer 'method'. It's not a CIO ideal. They have a website so you do not necessarily need to buy the book- it's a forum and the moms are really helpful. Or you can just search out diff topics on the forum.

But I would like to comment that a 14 month old is capable of crying a little bit without feeling abandoned. Sometimes my 2 yo wakes up in the middle of the night, fusses and outright cries but if I hold back and give her the opportunity to work it out herself (usually less than 3 minutes)- she will lay back down and go right back to sleep. No interference from me. ((hugs)) and good luck!

When my son turned a year or just before I decided I had to do something to get him sleeping through the night because I had my daughter when he was 10 months old, so not only was I waking up with her like every 2 hours and staying up with her for an hour, but I was also waking up with my son. Usually it was only 1 or 2 times to give him a little bottle, but it was still wearing on me. I couldnt do the CIO method either. It would break my heart. What I started to do since he was only waking up for a bottle, I started filling 1 or 2 bottles of water or something and putting them in the same place in his crib every night so it was right next to him and it took like a week, but after that he never bothered me at night again (only if hewas sick or something) I dont know if your child is waking to eat or whatever, but its worth a shot I guess. It was probally the best thing I ever did.

Maybe you could start off by sleeping in the same room so he could see you from the crib.

Quoting SarahDun:“ I NEED to get my 14 month old sleeping through the night however I'm not a big believe in the "cry it ... [snip!] ... are other methods to try??? I'm due in 2 months w/baby #2 so I HAVE to get him eeping through the night by then!!!!!!!!!!!”

Believe me girl I fel ya!! My 2 are almost 10 months apart!!!! Honestly Though I wouldnt have it any other way!! It was really hard the 1st 2 months, but it isnt 1/2 as bad as I thought it was gonna be. I lucked out because their both really really good babies. Now they are the best of friends1! They love eachother oo much. Their already fighting ike siblings do, but they are sooo cute together. And because your son is so young, he probally wont be jealous when the new baby comes! My son used to put ablnket on Susie when she was 1st born if she ried or giveher a bottle. Their always so cute together and it's twice as much work, but twice as much fun and twice the reward!!! Best of Luck!!!!
