Mom's with climbers:

posted 19th Aug
I posted a little bit about this already but I dont know what to do. My 24 month old son started climbing out of his crib today. Usually he is the best napper but today I will put him in his crib and wont even make it out his bedroom door and he will have climbed out. I kept putting him back and firmly saying "Jackson do not get out of your crib, it's time to take a nap". I did this for an hour and a half   and finally just gave up. He's got the flu so surely he's tired, and he's never skipped a nap before so I dont know what the deal is. I even tried some Motrin, but no luck. Has anyone tried the crib tents? I was thinking about making a special trip to Babies R Us if they really work. Anything for my sanity.

The last time I went to check on him and found him playing I asked him why he wasnt taking a nap. His reply? "Ummmm, cuz".

Well, I would just keep being consistant with him putting him back in the bed and whatnot. He'll eventually catch on. May not be as soon as you'd like, though.

Usually once they start climbing out of the crib, it's time for a big boy bed (or a toddler one anyway) my daughter was in a twin bed by 18 months because she was climbing. As far as playing during naps~ it's normal if they aren't tired, you can't make them sleep.

He's already got a toddler bed set up in his room, but he's no where near ready for it. I know he's tired because he should have taken a nap at 12 and it's almost 4! And he's fussy and rubbing his eyes.

Just be careful! When my nephew was able to walk, he started doing the same thing. One night, he tried SO hard that the mattress gave out and it fell to the floor. He was okay, luckily, he thought it was funny.

It wasn't a cheap crib at all. But it's just a little fact for you.

My sister used to put a crib tent on my neices crib. She was no where near a bed but would not stay in the crib it helped alot.

IMO just get a toddler bed before he gets hurt trying to get out of the crib. If his foot gets caught or something he's goona ebd up hurt bad and you dont want that. My daughter is 17mo and can get halfway up already so we're moving her to the toddler bed but if you got a tent it wouldn't last long before he needs a bed anyway

why do you say he's not ready for a toddler bed? He may climb out of a toddler bed, but he is also climbing out of his crib~ & if he falls climbing out of the bed, he has less of a fall then from his crib. As far as his nap, if he has the flu, maybe he is too miserable to sleep~ There are times I get so tired, I can't fall alseep.

He wakes up several times a night looking for his binky and he can open doors so I'm afraid he would wake up and do some nighttime wandering. I think I will just get a crib tent and make life easier on all of us.

He might be in pain like achy (sp?) cuz I've had the flu and you feel miserable so maybe he just CAN"T sleep

I was worried about that too~ I put a safety gate up in her doorway, that way if she got up & I didn't hear her right away~ she would still be safe & not running all over the house.

That would be a great idea if it would work lol. Jackson can scale a babygate in about 2 seconds flat.

He's feeling a whole lot better, and seems totally fine without his nap. I took him outside and ran and played for a long time and seems fine.

How about one of those tall ones? They are like 3-4 feet tall and smooth so he has no toe support and they usually have latches so you can open it like a door. I do have to say the crib tent might work, but I was always worried about the climbing child get stuck in it and falling and yanking it off on their way down. My kids are the King and Queen of escape artists.   Another suggestionis get one of those baby monitors that has a cpl of the sensor deals and keep one in his room and one, say, in the living room, that way if he wanders, you have a better chance of hearing him.
