breast feeding and anibiotics

posted 18th Aug
I just recently got a terrible kidney infection. They put me on cephalexin and told me it was fine to continue to breast feed. It has made my baby very fussy I think. The past few days she has had alot more gas and she is crying alot more. Has anyone had this happen to them and if so what did you do? I am very worried about this and I wondering if I should just introduce formula and be done breast feeding. Also, since I have been sick I have not been eating very well if at all. Can this affect my babies health? My mom gave me a lecture about my babies bones and teeth not being healthy because my body can't handle giving away any more of my nutrients. I had some problems after deliver and have been sick quite a bit so I weigh alot less than I did before I even got pregnant. I just want to do what is right for my baby. Please any opinion will help

Please don't quit if you really enjoy breastfeeding. I was on antibiotics for two weeks while breastfeeding...they won't give you anything that could harm your baby if they know you nursing!! Baby might be a bit fussy but that will end! You're not taking the meds forever just a week or two out of your life. I wouldn't let that effect how I nourish my baby for the next year!

Your mom...sounds like my mother..lol. She tells my sister and sister in law who just had a baby she shouldn't breast feed if she's not eating 100% healthy. The they come to me asking if she's right and if they should stop. Your body will make everything it needs to to feed your baby and make her healthy and happy!

I took cephalexin while breastfeeding with no issues. Also, are you still taking prenatals? You may want to also consider adding a calcium supplement on top of that. You should probably talk to a doctor first, but mine recommend I take additional calcium. And yes, what you eat and how much you eat is important. You need plenty of calories to keep making nutritional milk for the baby! Try not to stress out about it too much, and if you feel you aren't getting enough than you can try those morning drink mixes that are high in nutrients. Like carnation instant breakfast, etc... they taste good, too!
