stopping BF after 6 days???? help?

posted 16th Aug
hey, anyone stop breast feeding after short time? any suggestions to help stop engorgment? swelling?

I have to stop breast feeding after only 6 days. ... breast is blocked, and unable to get food to baby, so switching to formula... but now my breast are SUPER hard and swollen and won't go down, and soooo sore!..
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What i did was just waited it out.
My sister told me that her dr told her that any soda would help?!
Good luck i know how it feels. It took me about 2 weeks to completly dry up..after 13 months of BFing

Having a blocked duct doesn't mean you have to stop. Warm compresses and massage in the shower work great for unblocking a duct. If you still want to switch, then it's your choice (I wish I could have BF longer, but I had no milk). To help with the pain, warm compresses and use your hand to express a tiny bit of milk, so it's not like going cold turkey.

Wear a good supportive bra, and do NOT express any milk (no matter how tempting). If you express, you stimulate, and stimulation just makes more milk. Other than that you have to wait it out (take advil for the soreness). good luck!

BRU has some cold packs made by Johnson&Johnson I think that fit really nicely in your bra - they are actually designed for breast feeding. Not sure you'd want to spend the money on them, but they are nice for going out because they conceal fairly well.

Cabbage leaves are supposed to help dry you up ....I am sure if you search about it, it will tell you the info. Good luck with whatever you decide. I couldn't BF but I had a breast reduction and no milk came in......

I'm presently quitting breast feeding as well cause my son and i both hate it and he takes the bottle better anyway but i find the easiest thing is to pump just to take the edge off when it hurts...I don't know if you have a pump but if you do, you can try that. It's easy to decrease your milk after that. If you only pump when you are really full, it'll slow down eventually.

OHMIGOD mother's know best!!!
Called my mom, and she told me when she had to stop herself from making milk when I was born , the hospital wrapped her boobs in a tensor bandage, tightly, .. and as swelling goes down you unwrap and wrap again, .. this helps compress the boobs, and hold them in place so gravity isn't moving them around causeing them to hurt more, and opening new pockets where milk can store.... I've been wrapped up in mine for an hour now, and OHMIGOD it's the best thing, hurt a lil at first, cuz the pressure but now it's great I can lay down without my boobs moving from one side to other or flat if on my back.. and so much less pain, and the tensor is helping my back too from holding these heavy 4 litre filled milk jugs!! .... They do this when you have breast reductions too to prevent swelling!...

Try it!!! if you don't ahve tensor, try tying a towel or sheet really tight across your boobs and tie it in the back... jsut make sure to let it go every couple hours to breath, change breast pads, and re wrap.
Good luck

Get in the shower and let the warm water beat on your breasts for 15 minutes, get out and let baby eat *If she wont latch on try expressing some milk with a pump then if that still doesn't work try a nipple shield until she can get latched on. The baby will empty the breast better then a pump* then if your making TOO Much milk use a cold pack for 3 minutes after the feeding. Remember heat brings the let down, cold stops making the milk. Try this every feeding and within 24 hours it should stop * I just went through this.. again* good luck. If you do not want to breastfeed then pump it out and ice it ice it ice it. So milk stops coming in.

agreed! You can still produce the milk but you have to be patient and hang in there.

It was the best thing I ever did. I was a 34G and miserable......I am so glad I chose to do it BEFORE babies or else I would have needed a whell barrel to carry them in! LOL
