False Advertising

posted 16th Aug
Have you seen the LetCaliforniaRing.org commercials? They're bullshit! They're using a heterosexual wedding to advertise equal rights for homosexuals... yeah, because that's not misleading or anything. You actually have to read into the website to find out that it's supporting homosexuals.

Now I'm not putting out my opinion on gay marriage here, just a little pissed about the false advertising they used!

I wouldn't call it false advertisement since it looks non-profit to me and I don't live in Cali so I don't know what the commercials are like but in some contexts I can understand them utilitzing hetero-couples.. IDK, it really all depends on the context and what's being said.. One can be a heterosexual AND support gay marriage at the same time afterall..

The commercial shows a woman trying to get down the aisle to marry a man, facing a ton of obstacles and says, "What if you couldn't marry the person you love?"... in no way does it mention gay marriage until you read into the website. I don't think the fact that it's non-profit should matter that it's false advertisement... it's still advertising while falsifying it's intentions.

Well maybe because it's a commercial (a VERY public form of advertisement) they felt the need to be a little more subtle rather than flash "Pro-Gay Rights!"

Alot of people are uppity about that subject and I'm sure alot of people wouldn't appreciated their children being privy to such an issue @ a young age..

But from what you described I see how the commercial correlates to the group's aim - it makes perfect sense to me in a PC subtle way..

And I don't think something can be deemed as "false advertisement" unless a business transaction is occuring

It's not a false advertisement. It's symbolism. They do it on purpose to make you pay attention to what comes later. You're supposed to pay attention, that's the whole point.

Also if they ran an ad with two hot men at the altar kissing passionately. The tv stations would see no end to the letters.

False advertisement would be saying, "Send us money to stop teh gays from getting married, it is threatening our way of life oh noes!!!!" and then putting the money toward pro-gay-marriage organizations.

It's no more false advertising than the antiabortion Crisis Pregnancy Centers running ads saying, "Pregnant? Considering abortion? Call us."

Or Tucks Medicated Pads with their hemorrhoid pads putting out matches. You don't use them to put out matches!

Yep.
i think any point it may make or any argument it may have would be disregarded by a lot of people immediately if it had something really obvious about gay rights on it.
It seems like its trying to find a clever way to get through some thick skulls
