daughters starting their periods...

one of my friend's kids jus started her period and she's jus turned ten. i asked her how did she explain to her daughter about it and she said "it's a natural thing that happens to all girls and it means that it's the first step to becoming a woman." my daughter is 8 and i kno i'm ahead of myself but im dreading the day when she starts her period. what have u mothers out there told ur daughters?

I am not a mom of a pre-teen haha....but I started my period when I was 10 years old and my mom had the school councelor talk to me. For me, I dont even remember what anyone said though bc I just wanted to go hang out with my friends some more haha.

does your daughter like to read? I read Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret when I was in 3rd grade.

I looked forward to getting my period every day after that.

then I got it and wondered why on earth I was so excited for it. it hurt!

i was stunned to find out a few weeks ago my little sister got her period. she's 10 too.she had already learned about it from health class in school. my cousins daughter got hers at 9yo. my opinion is all the hormones and crap they put in everything these days doesn't surprise me girls are starting younger and younger!

well... i don't have a daughter or even a child that age.. but my sister (like my mom) said welcome to womanhood... and my aunt just flat out said .. you know you can get pregnant now.... i was 11 .... i really don't know what i would tell my daughter if i have one... i know that i knew all about it because we had like 2 classes about becoming a woman and puberty and all that around 5th grade... that really helped.. even though i really didn't know what happened when i started i thought i shit myself.. lol.. i would probably just explain how it's a natural event that occurs in every young womans life, what happens,, how long it lasts and so on.... i would definately be honest but not all nasty honest... if that makes sense

Its starting younger and younger with the new generations..id like to know whats causing it...It was March 13th, 11 days after I had just turned 13...I remember my dad making fun of me..thank god it happened when i was at home...

lol this reminds me of when i was 11 and i told my mom that i had started my period... she said " OH LORD, NOOOOOOOOO" and pretty much called the entire family telling them shes going to need to go to the store and buy pads for the new little "woman of the house"   sooo embaressing!!

yeah there's lots of nice books that are written in ways for girls to understand, im sure that will do the trick. and then you could go through the book with her and answer any questions she has. Awww it must be a bit strange but i remember when i started mine at 12, my mum kept going on and on "ohh my baby is becoming a young lady now" i was like "MuuuuuuuuuM!!!!!!"

i was the 1st girl in my school to get boobs lol
i was 9 and skinny too....

the tradition with jewish families is when you start your period for the first time they slap you across the face to try and get the blood to go back to your face!how fucked up is that?

And the day i actually got my first period, was weird cos i was out in the supermarket with my mum, and at the checkout i got a cramp pain in my belly, and as id not experienced them yet it scared me and i fainted on the floor falling onto the trolley!!! LOL,...the shop people came running, mum was freaking out and i was like "oh what happened" anyways i went home and saw my period there....(TMI) and was too embarrassed to tell mum, she was still freaking out about why id fainted wanted to take me to hospital (bless her) then i had to tell her....was so embarrassing....lol

bwahaha I totally read that book...I was the first one out of my friends to get my period and the last one out of the whole school to get boobs.

i would at least tell your daughter somthing in the near future. i think i was around 10 or 11 when my mom fully explained...well not fully but enough. granted looking back she expected me to start soon after, i think cause she did. i was almost 13 before anything happened, and i dident get boobs till i got pergnany with my first last year! , lol! i have just heard to many stories about girls freeking out when it happens cause they were naver told before hand. so i would be more apt to say somthing before somone else does.
