brown rice cereal!!!

posted 15th Aug
i have not started opal on any solids yet, but i'm getting all twitchy about it.

i bought safety spoons the other day and i find myself looking longingly at her bib collection. i'm not in a big rush to make her poop smell worse so i will probably wait until she is at least 6 months and can sit completely unassisted. besides, she's in the 75th percentile for weight and height with breastmilk alone.

i have never been thrilled with the idea of white rice cereal. i avoid white rice, white bread and white anything as much as possible and i was not excited about it being my daughter's first food. i had come up with a plan to puree whole grains for her at home and give her those instead of these boxed white abominations and then there it is, at the natural food store, brown rice cereal!!!

i'm still not sure if that's what i will use, but i'm thrilled that it's out there. i wanted to let you guys know about it since i've only seen it mentioned in one topic here. brown rice cereal, baby! at supermarkets near you!

Oh wow, I've never heard of brown rice cereal. We never used the white rice cereal much, Will didn't like it. He liked Oatmeal and Barly better, lol.

Just wondering, why are you so adament about having your child avoid white rice cereal? I understand breads, etc. at a toddler age but I thought white rice cereal was recommend as a first food because it has the smallest possibility for allergies and is easiest to digest..

well, i don't blame him! they are better. barley and oatmeal have portions of bran that cannot be removed unlike the shiny white rice.

i am really happy there are a few baby food companies that think like i do. nutrition is really important to me. i like to get the most good out of the food i eat... i can't afford to shop at whole foods, but i like to eat whole food.

I understand, that's how I am. I'm pretty funny about nutrition, especially when it comes to Will. I personally don't eat white rice or white bread either just b/c you get so much more bang for your buck with the whole grains. BTW... my doc told me that you don't HAVE to start your child on cereal, their first food can be anything as long as it's not meat or the high allergin foods.

leaving the bran on the grains of rice does not increase it's allergenic potential.

white rice has a very high glycemic index and very few nutrients until they fortify (add to) it with vitamins and minerals. brown rice has a lower glycemic index, is digested much slower and has naturally present vitamins and minerals before fortification. brown rice is a whole food and white rice (while it is just the exact same thing, stripped naked) is a half food at best.

here is a picture of a whole kernel of rice... this is what brown rice is:

Will was the same way... we normally ended up mixing his cerea with baby food. Surprisingly he really, really likes carrots mixed with barley.
