how long does formula stay good?

posted 15th Aug
My daughter isn't in any rush when she eats. She looks around, takes breaks, and she can take a while to finish her bottle. I had read somewhere that once the formula was made into a bottle it wasn't good after an hour....if her feedings last that long do I need to empty it out & make a new bottle? It's probably a stupid question, but I don't want to risk anything making her sick.

yOU CAN ALSO PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE AND REHEAT IT BUT THEY SAY IT'S ONLY GOOD REHEATED ONCE. AND THAT SHOULD BE GOOD FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS OR SO

Up to 2 hours is ok. After that it should be tossed out.

And not trying to be pushy or whatnot, but it might be a good idea to start stricter eating habits, such as sit down and finish the meal in one sitting.
I've always done that with Aiden and he's a good eater, but my friend who let her daughter snack, well she regrets it because she wont stay sitting for more then 2-3 minutes.

If they drink off of it, it's only good for so long.. even if you refrigerate it.
Up to 2 hours, I would only risk one hour is shes drank off of it quite a few times.

Pre made formula is 2 hours, powder mixed is 1 hour. It says all of this on the container

Well, she's 3 weeks old & I'm definitely doing everything I can to encourage her to focus on eating. I make sure to do my best at stimulating her (rubbing her foot, talking to her, ect ect) to keep her awake & she isn't always a slow eater, but there are times she is very slow.

I thought she was older! lol
3 weeks is fine then haha, I'm thinking a 6 month old who gets up and crawls around.
No, don't even worry about that for a few more months.. nevermind lol.

That's a personal experience hun, babies do get sick from old bottles.
Even with 2 kids, it should still be standard to toss a bottle after 1-2 hours.

I'm sure a majority of the people on this site will tell you that.

I figured you assumed she was older, no worries. I think it takes so long because it takes her so long to burp, and I'm trying to burp her in the middle of her feeding so she doesn't have spit up issues. We were breastfeeding until very recently and a medical condition caused me to stop, so this entire formula thing makes me nervous.

this is another of the things that they keep changing...

i had Alana 7 years ago and i was told the best way to manage with a baby was to make up all the bottle for the day and keep them in the fridge until they where needed and then just reheat.

i did that until she was weened.. it never harmed her and it was so much easyier than having ascreaming baby waiting for a feed while you make up a bottle.

i say dont throw it.

My doctor is old school and told me that I don't have to throw out the formula after exactly an hour. She said that generally, it is the nipple that bacteria grows on and that as long as I change the nipple on the bottle, my daughter will be fine. So far, we've had no problems.

dont get your panties in a wad...im just saying that her baby will be fine..there are enough things that we as mothers have to worry about..setting a timer to when your lil one starts drinking their bottles shouldnt be another one..
