Bassinet or Co Sleeper??

posted 15th Aug
Ok my fiance's dad's family wants to pitch in and buy us something really nice for the baby. Well my sis is already gonna buy the crib and we already have a travel system so i was thinking a cosleep or bassinet. But which is better? I read in my FitPregnancy mag that it is better for the baby to sleep in the same room as the parents the first few months just not on the bed with them. I will be trying to breastfeed (if that makes any diff. between the two) So please help, this is my first baby and I may be overlooking obvious advantages/disadvantages for one of the two! Thanks!!!

I say co-sleeper only b/c they can then turn into a travel basinet or pack in play. I used it with both of my boys and will use it again for my twins. They rock!

Just to throw a different view in the mix, I used a bassinet with my first for six weeks and didn't love it. My second slept in his crib from day one. I like having them in their own rooms to be able to change them and feed them without waking up my husband (or vice versa if it's his turn to get up).

it depends on what you want to do. I decided on a bassinet. I couldnt live with myself if something happened. Although those new things that hang off the bed are nice too.

I would get a pack -n -play with a built in bassinet! That way you can use it for a really long time. You can pack it and take it to family members houses to have a bed for the bub to sleep in, or just play in. They're wonderful!

I got a pack-n-play. It has a bassinet built in and I plan on putting it right next to my side of the bed at night. So I guess it's like a combo-type thing. If he's hungry, I can just grab him and stick him on the boob.

I got a bassinet used it for about 2 weeks after so many tries to get the baby to sleep in there...now she sleeps in her rocker/bouncy seat every night

So I would say try the co sleeper/pack n play...and if you are going to breastfeed its sooooooo handy having them right there next to you..and something I did to make life even easier was I made an area in our bedroom to change her diaper so I didnt have to walk down the hall, turn on lights, and etc

I have the crib set up not even three feet from my side of the bed. We are living with in the in laws atm so we have to room in together. Once we finish the basement the children will have their own room finally. (his 11yr old son is here every other weekend) I have a combo of both bed side sleeper and bassinet from my sister. It will be a bassinet, I can't have the bed side sleeper when I have two little dogs used to sleeping in the bed with us. They would over run the sleeper. Besides I don't want her in the bed with us, I know ppl who have done that and they wind up with 4 year olds still sleeping in their bed. Sorry ladies, I like what else the bed is made for besides sleeping......... kinda hard when a baby is the middle of it lol.

I would say pack n play with built in bassinet, the one I bought vibrates and with my previous two it really helped that the bassinet or whatever they were sleeping in moved, it was the only way I got any sleep. My second daughter actually slept in her swing the first 6 weeks and that was the only place she would sleep longer than an hour!! Good luck!

i used my bassinet for about 2 months then had to move him to his crib. He would turn himself in the middle of the night and be sideways, he would be kicking his feet and his head would be banging on the side of the bassinet.

We had a bassinet, but it was so hard to lay him down in it without him waking up. We ended up co-sleeping for the first 3 months, which was nice because I was breastfeeding. When he would wake up, I wouldn't have to get up...just pull the boob out lol. After the 3 months, he started sleeping in his bassinet and by 4 months he was sleeping in his crib in his bedroom. It is kind of nice to co-sleep too because you are so close to the baby and can keep an eye on them...I was always worried about whether he was breathing or not. First time mom paranoia I guess...

We have a pack N' play that has a bassinet like insert and a changing table add-on as well. It has worked out great for us. It has a spot for everything-diapers,wipes,etc. It makes those first few nights when the baby gets up 3 or 4 times much easier, and if we need to we can pack everything up when we go away.
