Blood Work

posted 15th Aug
I have taken my 6 year old for her blood work twice in the last week and each time she throws a fit and goes crazyand cant get it drawn. I live in a small town with only one nurse, no doctor, and they wont let us restrain her to have it done. So now my hubby has to travel 2 hrs by plane with her to a hospital to have it done. We have pleaded with her, bribed her ..... you name it and we have tried it. Can someone please help me with somethings that you have tried that maybe would work on my 86 pound 6 year old?????

Maybe let them poke you first, so that she can see for herself that it's not a big deal.

I did exactly that this morning. I had to have my hcg levels checked and I got mine done first and she watched and was interested but as soon as she sat down, her lip started to quiver and then she flipped out again. I am way too stressed!

Hm. I wish I had more advice. As a kid I was always really scared of needles too, and I remember leaving a couple of places without getting blood drawn or getting a flu shot like I was supposed to because I pitched such a fit.

I used to be the same way as ur daughter! (well...im still deathly afraid of needles...lol) I had to get a ton of testing done as a child bc i kept getting bladder infections. I would scream at the top of my lungs and scare all the kids in the waiting room. So my mom told me one day all about what the Dr was going to do and that if i was good and got my blood takin she would take me to the toy store and i could pick out a toy. It worked, i cried but i didnt scream or try to run away! Try making going to the Dr a positive experience by giving her a reward afterwards.
Oh and also, my mom just had surgery the other day and had to get an IV and the Dr put ICE COLD water on the area he was going to stick her and she said she didnt feel a thing bc the ice numbed it, maybe you could also try that w/ ur daughter.

I have promised her everything but the moon! A nintendo wii, money, sonic hero friends......and the list goes on!!! We did get her this morning because we put her on a gurney and held her down but we stabbed her twice with the needle and didnt get a drop. So she has an appointment early next month to see the cardiologist and we will have it done at the hospital while we are there. We only have a clinic here with no doctors and no one who takes blood from kids regularly!
