abolish nuclear weapons?

posted 14th Aug

The Following is from an article.. Question is in bold.

The nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 forever changed the face of war, and the half-century of Cold War which followed was dominated, above all, by the threat of nuclear destruction. Both superpowers raced to produce a greater arsenal than their opponents, leading to the point where they had the ability to destroy the world several times over. Added to the direct destructive power of the weapons was the consensus growing among scientists from 1970s onwards that a major war would plunge the world into a ‘nuclear winter’, destroying life even in places that had escaped attack. This led to the concept of ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’, a stalemate in which both sides knew that the use of their weapons would lead to their own destruction as well as their enemies’.The global situation has, however, changed substantially since the end of the Cold War. Nuclear Weapons have ceased to dominate world politics; however, the fear of proliferation – the spread of weapons of mass destruction to many more countries – is also on the rise. The Proposition in this debate will focus on the total abolition of the world’s nuclear arsenals as a realistic goal to aim for. The opposition is more pragmatic, not defending the weapons per se but insisting that they remain a necessary evil.

I am 100% for abolishing all nuclear weapons. I think they are completely unnecessary and I honestly don't want to think about what could happen if they got into the wrong hands.

my question is how are they going to abolish an item that can destroy the earth?
You can't just get rid of it..and you can't just let it fire off in the majaye(sp) desert either...sorry....I personally think we should have never invented them at all..but purpose do they serve, to distroy a whole nation? that doesn't solve anything...Look at what it do to Japan...That was kinda pointless but then again they did blow up pearl harbor...ok i'm done...maybe you should put them in space and blow them up..see what happends...?

Well ill start.. id say Def..

And my reasoning is in the article.. We as in the US have enough nuclear bombs to destroy the enitre world 10 times over.. Nobody but God should have that power.

What ever happend to "real" war.. one without bombs, and weapons of mass destruction.. Whatever happened to going to a field and fighting like men?

There is no way to abolish them 100%. We cannot get rid of what we created, although I wish it was possible.

I cannot believe people are still feeling the effects! Shows how powerful those little atoms and molecules are, eh? lol

There is nothing on Earth more dangerous than the human mind. What we have thought of, created, invented, whatever, is what gets us in these messes. Whatever happened to fighting like men? Someone invented the gun! And a bomb! And a tank! Technology is evil!
