Meningitis vaccine
posted 14th Aug
I'm normally all about getting whatever vaccines the dr says we need for our girl, but they're always covered by the province Except for this one - has anyone else had to pay $80 for the meningitis vaccine? Because hubby knows someone who died of it, and my family knows of a woman who contracted it as an infant and suffered severe brain damage because of it, we're all about getting it done, but why would we have to pay for this vaccine when the others are free?
Especially since the MB gov't is making it mandatory for all kids in Gr 4 to get the shot, too. ????
If anyone has any insight, that'd be greatly appreciated!

My friend from high school got it, and died of it anyways, sounds like a waste of money and life.

First off there are different types of menengitis - are you sure that those people died from the kind that the vaccine was supposed to prevent? Secondly, I was under the impression that all recommended vaccines in canada were covered by medical.

Weird... it's covered in AB

That's what I thought too - from what my dr said, the infant ones (they're supposed to get the shot at 2 months, 6 months, and 12 months - but since my girl didn't have any, and she's 7 months, we're going to get it today) are the parent's choice as to whether or not they want to get them, since they do cost money. But in Gr 4, the gov't covers the mandatory shots.
I'll ask him to see if he knows why this one isn't covered.
(No, neither hubby's nor my work covers this. Very bizarre....and apparently, according to the pharmacist, the MB gov't doesn't cover really any vaccines, with the exception of this Gr 4 one.).
I'm so confused. !!!

Ok, this is just a follow-up -
I asked my dr yesterday about it being covered in AB and not here - and he said that was b/c there was an outbreak of infant meningitis, so the gov't is paying for the vaccine. But here in MB, since there's no outbreak, it's not mandatory. I wasn't gonna take my chances. !!!
