is it wrong??

posted 13th Aug
okay i have a 12 week old little boy. He is 14 lbs and 24 inches long. The doctor says he is big for his age, both height and weight wise. Well, regular formula bottles do not fill him up. If he has a plain formula bottle he will be hungry within the hour. I started putting cereal in his bottle when he was about 8 and a half weeks old. I started out with a little and now put about 3 ounces of cereal in a 5 ounce bottle. For the past week ive been putting about a tablespoon of banana baby food in the bottle also. Since ive been doing this he goes about 4 hours without needing fed again and goes to the bathroom everyday. Before he needed karo syrup every few days because hed get constipated...However, my boyfriend and his mom are mad at me for doing this. They say he is just a baby and im trying to make him grow up to fast. so...am i wrong for it?

IMO unless your doctor tells you to give them cereal in their bottle you shouldnt. Its a choking hazard and it could mess up their digestive system. IMO you should just give him more formula instead of adding cereal but then again that's JMO.

Edit to add* my son is going to be 7 months and weights over 22lbs but his doctor says he's healthy. He's about 28 1/2 inches. When he was 12 weeks i think he was 24-25in and about 14-17 lbs.

I don't really think so. Course my son is 5, so it has been a LONG time since I really had to think about bottles. BUT, if the regular bottle does not satisify him, and what you are doing is not causing his tummy to be upset, then I don't see what the harm is.

If you are going to give him cereal dont give it to him in a bottle...give it to him in a bowl with a spoon the way food is typically served. I didn't ness. wait to get  in with my pedi before I gave him cereal but I waited for the okay for the veggies/fruits. There are cues you should use when deciding to give your baby food or cereal, look at those and then decide!

Cereal and baby food in his bottle?

Both of those should be fed by spoon if at all at his age.

I would suggest you stop putting Bananas in your childs bottle.

It's safer to give cereal with a spoon than through the bottle. I would talk to your baby's pedi. Tell him/her your concerns about your baby always being hungry.

WOW that kid eats a lot.. but IMO i think its ok to add a little cereal to bottles BUT ONLY when the doctor says its ok.. my son ate 1 teaspoon of cereal in a 4 ounce bottle when he was 3 weeks hold..and he would go 3-4 hours between feedings...but i know i read some were that it cancause over weight babies. and IMO its true.. my son has a 9 month old cousin that has never ever drank just a pure milk bottle.. her parents add cereal and food to every one she has drank since she was 4 weeks old..and she weighs 35 lbs and is only 22 inches long.. she is HUGE!

I dunno. He doesnt seem in pain...at all!! He sleeps better and goes longer without eating. Even on just formula he was eating so much he was gaining 2-3 ounces a day!! If i thought it hurt him i wouldnt do it. His pediatrician said to feed him a 5 ounce bottle of formula every 1-2 hrs but then wants to complain how big he is...his formula doesnt fill him up. if he eats cereal he keeps it down, if its just formula he throws it up. I just dont know!!

it sounds like you need a new pediatrician...

my friends little boy did that too(only kept cereal and milk down)..but he ended up having a stomach blockage and neeeding emergency surgery .. but he had been losing weight not gaining it..

yea ive been thinking about that. They ran out of the shots theyre supposed to get at 2 months so he only got 2 of the 4 shots...and that was2 weeks ago. im still waiting on them to get the other 2 in so they can give them to him instead of just waiting to get it all over with at once...but yea hes completely against anything but formula before 4 months.

IMO you really shouldn't be putting anything in his bottles, especially bananas.  When Nathan was that age, he would eat every 3 hrs.  He's still a newborn and needs more formula than cereal.  Isn't 3oz of cereal a lot for a 5 oz bottle too?
