I saw this movie yesterday. The people that they were describing were actors, and they were referencing the self-servingactions of the actors. I didn't let my kids watch this movie, nor would I. I have a MR nephew and brother, and the word retard isn't allowed in my house. But when I watched the movie, the conversation is between two men who are self-absorbed jackasses, and it just served to showcase how ignorant these two characters are. That is the point of the conversation, to show how ignorant they are. Not to make fun of MR people. You have to consider the source. Kind of like how in a movie about White Supremicists, there would be at least one conversation about Jewish people and black people and how much they hate them, using slurs.

Kind of OT, but why is not O.K. to use retarded as a slur, but it's O.K. toput down Muslims, fat people, Asians, gays, and devout Christians?

I agree with those who say that the word "retarded" no longer really refers to those with a mental disability. I used to get in trouble when I was a kid for calling my sister "retarded" when she acted like a dumbass.So instead, I started calling her a "re-re" which essentially meant the same thing, that she was being a dumbass. I found it kind of interesting that my father would scold me for using the word "retarded" b/c it was a derogatory term for the mentally disabled, which actually was NOT the way I was using the term since my sister had no mental disability (at least that I know of, haha, just kidding). But he would not scold me for calling her a "re-re" even though to me, i was still calling her a dumbass. Does that make sense?
Anyways, as for boycotting the movie, I think it's kinda pointless. It's probably the same people who boycott shows like South Park, but that show is still going strong (although I think the more recent South Park episodes have been lame, but I digress).... you can boycott for your own beliefs but don't think it will actually make any sort ofdifference in the world. People are still going to use the term "retarded" just like they use any other slur.

ETA: Oh yeah, and I plan on renting this movie tonight. If it happens to change my opinion than I'll be sure to share that with you all, however I doubt that it will. It takes A LOT to offend me, and most of the time if the offensive act is for the sake of comedy, than I generally tend to just "laugh it off" can't take everything in life too seriously.

Ben Stiller, seem like a very humble, nice and funny guy, I've seen his interviews before and he doesn't seem like the type who would want to obviously offend retarded people..I'm sure he was just trying to be funny, not realizing people would take offense to it...he just doesn't seem like the type who would go out of his way to hurt peoples feelings...

They do this with just about every movie that pertains to a certain group though...A couple years ago they went after Gwen Paltrow for Shallow Hal, saying her wearing of the fat suit was insensitive to overweight women....Then they went after Greg Kinear and Matt Damon when they did that movie about conjoined twins...they go after every movie....it's stupid. It's meant for a laugh but not to offend.

I agree, I mean, I can't be completely 100% sympathetic b/c I don't have a child with a MD, but I have family members with MDs. We don't make fun of them, but at the same time we don't treat them as "special" or anything like that, they're just regular old (crazy) relatives like the rest of us.

This topic actually reminds me of my friend who has a daughter with Down's. My friend actually gets mad at someone if they say her daughter has "special needs" more so than if they say she's "retarded." In her opinion her daughter IS in fact retarded (if you are using the word to describe someone with a MD) but not special needs. To say her daughter has special needs would be to say that she can't do or is incapable of doing the same thing that other children can do, which is just not true at all.

Tropic Thunder sucked. It had potential but it was so unfunny... I found myself forcing myself laugh at points.
