From cosleeping to crib sleeping

posted 13th Aug
Okay so recently I have moved in with relatives. My boyfriend and I used to have a one bedroom apartment and he would sleep on the couch and I would sleep in bed with my babe.

Since moving my boyfriend does not feel comfortable sleeping on the couch in the living room so he sleeps in bed with me. The bed is not big enough for the 3 of us to fit comfortably leaving me with no choice but to put my little man in his crib for the night.

When we coslept he would sleep at least 8 hours with one wakeup for a bottle.
Ever since transitioning him to the crib he wakes up every 3-3 1/2 hours and will stay awake for 2 hour stretches.

For instance, last night we went to sleep at 10:30. He awoke at midnight and stayed up until 2. Woke back up at 5:30 am. Fell back asleep at 7. Woke back up at 8. I brought him back to bed with me (because boyfriend was awake) and he slept until 2 pm with no interruptions.

We have coslept since day 1 and I know he is waking up because he does not see me there with him and he is not used to that. Personally I hate it myself, not having him in bed with me. Also the fact that we have moved so we are in a different environment. I transitioned him to the crib about 2 weeks ago.

Now, my question is, how long does it normally take for them to be comfortable sleeping on their own? I can understand the frequent wakings, but I don't understand why he is not falling back asleep for 1 1/2-2 hours.

Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.

Do you have a set bedtime routine? if not then def get on one... and as hard as it is for you (both of you) try not to cosleep at all-not even naps. It was really hard to make the transition to be honest, and Kendall still wakes up every 3 hours or so (thats never changed) also, if you can put a fan in his room (obviously not pointing on him) for the white noise...we have a fan that rises and falls, so it sounds like breathing

bed time routine!!!

i slept with Mallory next to the bed in her porable crib thing.. that way she could see me.. then she got moved to her crib when she was like 4mths. we sleep in the same room still, so as long as she wakes up and sees me, shes fine.

try using a bassinet or something close to the bed.

No, I don't. I also should have mentioned that his crib is now in a seperate room because there is no room in the room that my boyfriend and I are staying in for the crib. It is in the room right next to ours & we have a video monitor. I wake up when I hear him. I lay there and watch him, listen to him for 10-15 minutes. I let him fuss if he starts, but when he starts screaming, I do go in and give him his paci, pat his butt, rub his back, and attempt to console him back to sleep. After all else fails I do pick him up and attempt to rock him. I cannot let him scream because there are quite a few people in this house and I don't want the whole house woken up. Also, I don't believe in CIO.

He has ALWAYS woke up once for a night time feeding. So I feed him one time that he wakes up. And also, he does have a bedtime routine. Bathtime, 7-8 ounce bottle, cuddle time, bedtime. Same time every night.

He's 7 months old. Can't use a bassinett. He's hated them since day 1. I wish I could fit the crib in here because I would put it here in a heartbeat.

He gets a bath with nighttime bath wash, nighttime lotion, with a little massage, and 7-8 ounce bottle. Cuddle time, and then he's out.

aww he's a big guy.

Mallory has been waking up a lot too... usually she'd toss and turn and go back to sleep.. if i went in she would FREAK OUT.. cry hysterically and demand i take her out.

now all of a sudden when she wakes up, if im not there.. complete melt down. try going to him asap when he wakes up, calm him down before it blows up. know what i mean? not going in right away gives him a chance to fully wake up and realize he's not sleeping with Mommy anymore.

ETA: do you let him fall asleep in his crib or put him in there after he passes out?

Normally I rock him until he's about half asleep so he's aware of where he is when he falls asleep. I figured that would help. :/ Apparently not. lol.

I will try your advice tonight.   Thank you.
