My baby's poo smells like vinegar

posted 12th Aug '08
I'm strictly breastfeeding right now and we've been working through Thrush and a food intolerance. But all of a sudden last night, her poops starting smelling of strong vinegar. Has anyone else heard of this? If you know of anything that might be causing this I'd appreciate. I've googled the internet and it seems pretty unheard of. Thanks ladies

My daughter gets that sometimes.. It's when she eats something she can't quite tolerate..

it's probably related ot the thrush or the medicine she's on for it ( if any) ..... as long a sit's not bothering her I'd give it a few days and see how things clear up. baby poop is all over the place ... there really is no "normal"

She might be a bit dehydrated. Cause Thats what happens to adults when they are slightly dehydrated their poop starts to smell like that.

Good point check the soft spot make sure it is not sinking in, it will be noticable.

I checked and you can see her soft spot pulsating. Is that normal? If she's dehydrated what do I do? Breastfeed her more?

I would call the pedi. It's not as easy to treat a dehydrated baby like it is an adult.

I could always see my daughter's soft spot pulsating, it would be sunken in if she were dehydrated, and she would have chapped lips, dry skin.. less wet/dirty diapers....... breastfed babies usually don't get dehydrated.. Are you sure you've discovered all of her intolerances?..

No, I'm starting to think thats what it is. I spoke to my lactation consultant eariler and she thinks it has to do with the thrush or yeast. She's never heard of this type of symptom but she doesn't think its an allergy. We'll see... hopefully it starts clearing up soon.

Seriously do NOT worry about it. I am strictly bfing too. My daughters poo has been smelling like vinegar for three months & it is NOT thrush nor is it an intolerance to anything I have been eating, My pedi said it is normal & that I should be grateful because once I start her on solids they will start smelling like stinky poos.
