VBAC or Repeat C-Section?

posted 12th Aug
So I was basically planning on having the repeat c-section this whole pregnancy, but somehow the closer I get to being due, the more I want to experience real labor. With my son, I didn't dilate past 5cm and my labor was pretty wimpy. My OB is all for me doing a VBAC, she actually prefers I do that over the c/s- IF my baby isn't going to be another 9-10 pounder. At this point, I don't think he will be, considering I have only gained 5 pounds and by this time last time with my son, I was HUGE! I'm definately not that big this time around. So I'm thinking that this baby could be smaller. I'm just freaked out about the whole uterine rupture thing, a woman I worked with went in for the VBAC, but ended up having to have a c/s anyway, and doc said good thing or someone wouldn't have made it. Totally has me scared. But I know that's rare. Is there someone out there who has had a positive experience with a VBAC? What kinds of things could I expect? Like, do they induce? Do they monitor you more? Thanks in advance ladies!

Im wondering the same thing. i have heard from many people that the second (planned) c section goes much smoother than the first emergency one. with less recovery time. is it worth it, or still try to do the vbac?

How old is yoiur other one? If it's less then 5 years your not supposed to have a VBAC but you can. I know someone who had 2 kids after having a c/s. All are doing GREAT.

I want to try for a VBAC next time at home with a midwife. I had a horrible experience with my OB and the hospital. How long has it been since your c-section? I know the longer it's been the less chance there is for uterine rupture and the chances of that are really small. I don't think they induce you w/ pitocin for a VBAC because it puts more stress on yoir body and uterus vs. natural contractions but don't quote me on that. I'm not 100% sure.

In October, it will be exactly 4 1/2 years... so pretty darn close, yet not quite 5 LOL!

I too am planing to do a VBAC this time around. My son decided to flip at the last moment and had to have a c-section the first time. I went thru 15hours of all natural labor --
BUT I am totally ok with doing a VBAC- I have done a LOT of research on VBAC's and asked LOTS of questions. I think thats the best thing you can do - just write down anything that concerns you and ask your dr about it. As far as a uturine rupture yeah there is only a .08% chance that will happen - its VERY rare!!
Do you know if the person that had a c-section in the end did she wait the approate tiem before getting pregnant? I mean they say that you should wait at least 18-24 months before giving birth again. It will be 20months when I give birth. Just don't let that scare you - again i would just talk to your dr too about everything. Good luck! OH! I was going to say - don't go by what you have gained as far as if the baby is big or not - that doesn't always mean anything. Usually each baby is bigger not smaller.

I'm just starting to be seen every 2 weeks now, but unfortunately my doc is so busy, because another OB in the office is on maternity leave, so I am unable to see her until the end of the month, and I really want to talk to her about all this. Since it's bugging me...I see the NP on Friday, I guess I could run it by her. Just to get her opinions on all this. One thing that does reassure me: my hospital won't do VBACs so I would be going to the U of M, which has a really good reputation. I feel like I would be in good hands there, I would just have a longer, crazier drive to get there, about 30 minutes maybe more if the 35W bridge hasn't reopened by then.

As for my coworker, I think her births we less than 3 years for sure maybe 2 apart. Her kids are pretty close in age. But with her they did use pitocin. This was like over 10 years ago, and I have heard recently they don't, but I asked because I have heard varying stories on this. And really, pitocin doesn't do CRAP for me, my labor came to a stand still when they gave it to me last time!

My doctor is not even giving me the option for VBAC. It's been almost 7 years since I had my twins via emergency c-section and he still will not let me. If I could have natural birth I totally would, at least to have the whole experience I guess. Even though I've heard Im not missing out on much I still want to know what its all about and I never will. Anyway if your doctor says its safe my advice is to at least try, just to avoid a long yucky recovery if anything...thats what Im dreading. Well good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I would say VBAC since a c-section (even scheduled) is a big medical prodedur. I would google search the ICAN group (a meeting for women who are highly interested in VBACs) and see if one meets near you,or,if there is a local leader that you can call. She might be able to point you in the right direction, I've never had a VBAC but know many women who have and the more natural with the birth (meaning, no induction/pit etc) the much higher % you have of everything going smoothly.

I am delivering at Mercy - they are all equiped for VBAC's. Yeah the potocine is probably what would of caused it. My dr wont use potocine, not when its a VBAC - I am allowed to go over a week but other than that there are other ways to induce and she said she will explain more in detail when it gets closer. I totally trust my dr. She has done many VBAC's and has a great success rate. She is very serious about them - if she feels that the woman is not going to be a good candiate for a VBAC she wont even consider it! I fully trust her.
