A step in the right direction.

posted 12th Aug
So I finally decided to get some help for myself. Not being insured, I went to various places seeking help for my PPD. I went to Mental Health clinics, where they wanted me to go to "self help groups" twice a month with addicts, and people with traumatizing pasts. This wasn't something I felt I needed - I just wanted to get on some kind of medication for the chemical imbalance I'd been experiencing since the birth of my daughter.

I finally had the idea to call my OB/GYN and talk to them about it. My doctor insisted that it wasn't PPD - seeing as I'd never mentioned it before and now my daughter is 5 months old. I felt hopeless but decided to call back this morning. I said, "I failed to mention that I've suffered from this since the birth of my daughter, but decided to wait it out and look for improvement. No such luck, I need help." They decided to prescribe me Paxil.

I know this won't solve life's problems or the issues going on inside my marriage, but atleast I'll be less anxious and able to think with a clear head.

I am excited and ready to start feeling normal again. It's been a long road.

I think that is great, but You may still need to talk with someone regularly.

That's true. I have a checkup appointment in two weeks to see how I'm doing. I guess we'll go from there.

I always find it easier to cope when you have an outlet and can get things off your chest.

I think it's awesome you looked (and possibly found) some help for yourself- it takes a lot of bravery. I just want to let you know from personal experience- my mother has been on paxil for years, about 8 I think, and she literally can't get off of it. She has tried many, many times. By about two or three days without it she gets nightsweats, hotflashes, basically has a mental breakdown and acts like a complete bitch- she couldn't even get off of it while she was pregnant with my siblings, they told her don't even bother trying, it's impossible! So basically she was prescribed a drug which unknowingly would make her dependant for the rest of her life. I would look into a different anti-depressant- prozac would be better- paxil may not be worth it. Just my opinion.

Good luck!

It's weird that they didn't immediately think it was PPD...I've heard of PPD not fully setting in UNTIL a woman is 5-6 months PP. I'm glad you are getting the help you need. I hope everything works out for the best for you!!

Thanks for the insight, I'll definately keep that in consideration.

Really? Well, when Carly was born I had the baby blues but since then it's gotten really bad. That's definately good to know.
