Staph Infection

posted 10th Aug '08
My baby was born on July 24th at 35 weeks exactly via c-section perfectly healthy.A week after i was discharged she stopped eating and was very lethargic so i took her to the emergency and she was later diagnosed as having a staph infection.Shes been there for 7 days so far.Has anyone else been in this situation? If so how long before your baby finally came home?

My daughter was in the PICU for 14 days after she was born. She was 3 days old when I had to take her to the hopsital because she was very lethargic and not waking up for bottles and such.

They coudln't find out what was wrong though. The ER gave her antibotics right away because her temp was very low and her resperations were low as well. They transported her to a childrens hospital, but they never really found out what was wrong. They ran every test on her known to man from a spinal tap to a cat scan and everything in between.

She is very healthy now though. She was born at 38 weeks but had the gestation of a 37 week old....

I hope your little baby gets to come home soon! How is she doing now?

shes doing alot better, shes more alert and she wakes up when i come and see her. They have her on 4 different antibiotics at the moment, they did a spinal tap and it came back negative and shes had 2 negative blood cultures after the positive onewhich means the infection is going down.Im kinda upset though because they're still not bottlefeeding her yet shes fed through an iv but her stomach is still empty I cant wait to bring her back home.

It's really rough seeing your child like that. I know how you feel, Momma. I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. Is this your first baby? [sorry I didn't look at your profile.]

My daughter was intabated for 24 hours and then she was taken off of it. They let me feed her day 5 of her stay. I was BF'ing and supplementing with the bottle also.

My daughter had so many anitbotics I can't even remember how many to be honest. She had some powerful ones too that gave her a horrible diaper rash. She had 2 blood transfusions of platelettes because she was losing those somewhere... she was in bad shape for awhile. It was touch and go if she was going to make it.

*Sigh* Rough rough time. I will pray for you and your little girl. Did you ask when she will be fed from a bottle or breast? I'm not sure if you were breastfeeding or not. Or when she will be able to come home since the infection seems to be going down?

That is great she is doing well. Your daughter's story sounds just like my daughters.

It must be that much more difficult with a 2 year old at home.   She is my only child so I stayed at the childrens hopsital all day long. My husband and I did... he had vacation time after she was born so we spent it at the hospital. I only came home every day to get a clean change of clothes/do laundry and I showered at the hopsital.

I really hope your little one is going to be okay. If you need to be pushy... ask questions as to why they aren't feeding her yet.... and that type of thing. I had to ask alot of questions to get anything out of the nurses. The doctors were great but they only made their rounds once a day.

My son was born at 35 weeks and developed a staph infection while in the NICU. He ended up staying 20 days but he will be one year old on Wednesday. I had a two year old son at home with me. I know that staph is scary and it can be very bad, but doctors are very careful with babies and they will make sure that your child is just fine. Doctors take better care of babies then adults, I think
Dont worry, your baby has special angels.

Yeah it is hard because im so worried about her,but at the same time i have to tend to him also.I wish i could spend the night with her but the hospital shes at doesnt have an overnight room.I went today and her crp levels have gone up yet again, and now they're saying that her liver is swollen Its always something.
