Clogged milk duct?

posted 9th Aug
I had a clogged milk duct about a week and a half after having my son. I used heating pads and massage to get rid of it but sill have a small lump in my breast. It was big about the size of a quarter and is now the size of a dime. How long does it take to go away. Should I be concerned about this?

Keep massaging, especially during feedings. A warm wash cloth before I nursed helped immensely.

Was she said already is great advice. Just keep nursing. I wouldn't pump at all if I were you (just so you know) until your baby is about 5-6 weeks old. It doesn't drain the breast as well as your child can.

umm not yet :-)
i woul dbe concerned if you noticed a decrese in your milk supply, or started running a fever. a clogged duct can sometime lead to mastitis.

try to nurse the baby with its chin toward the duct.. or rotate positions with that breast. if the baby doesnt empty the breast try pumping to make sure that the breast is emptied. this will also help prevent infection. also keep up with the heating pads and massages. that will help loosen it up.

only pump after the baby has nursed tho. over pumping can increase your supply which is both great and bad.. depending on your views. so i would recommend only pumping an ounce or so after the baby nurses. its just an extra "help"

i had mastitis when my son was 3 weeks old from a clogged duct. and i pumped and emptied both breasts after my son nursed and soon was able to pump 14oz's. i thought it was great! but some women might not think so :-)

Oh if you dont want to pump... just continue to offer the breast as much as possable. and on a side note...

dont "skip" the other breast in the rotation. that leads to numerous other little breastfeeding issues.

if you have any other questions, the Le Leche League has great breastfeeding support. they have local leaders everywhere for FREE help. look at their website and find one in your area. they always have phone numbers listed for instances like this. and i can promise they will be more than happy to help :-)

I only breast feed while in the hospital. Im not currently breast feeding now. The Dr is the one who said I had a clogged duct though.

Well if you aren't wanting to continue BFing, then you shouldn't nurse. You will get engorged until your milk dries up.

Why aren't you BFing now, just curious...

This is a lil off the topic but since we're talking about BF....how often do you BF. My lil girl is 1 week old and she finally latched on the other day and I am so happy she did, however, it seems that she is never full bc she wants to be fed like every 10 min off of the boob. I never get a break!!! Also, since she started BF she haasnt had a poopie diaper in 2 days. Is this normal? Oh also, since BF she has reallysmelly gas all the time. Non stop and it smells like eggs! Normal for BF babies?

That's the way my son was at first! If you stick to it, the payoff will be GREAT. Babies having gas is normal, but not all the time. If I were you, I'd cut out some of the gasier foods from my diet, like brocolli, cabbage, beans, etc. Make sure also to chew your food reallllly well.

Most of the time, it is normal for BF babies to go several days without pooping, but ONLY as long as they have 6-8 wet diapers a day.

If you have any other questions, just PM me and I'll be glad to help.

Warm showers with the warm water spray directly onto the spot and massage gentle at the same time. Starting from the outer part of the breast working toward the nipple. Don't just do dry heat, try moist heat too. Take some tylenol for the pain. Since you are no longer b/f nursing the baby is not an option and if you pump- you will stimulate the milk supply.

If the lump gets bigger, harder, redder or does not clear up in a few more days call your doctor. If at ANY time you get a fever (even a low grade one)- call the doctor asap- that means it has moved from clogged duct to infection. You want to catch that as soon as you can, they can get nasty.

ya my son was a big cluster feeder. he would nurse every 10 min too. but congrats on getting her to latch on. stick with it. the first month is the hardest..

as for advice. if your not breastfeeding anymore i have NO CLUE what to do. tape your chest and bind your boobs is all ive ever been told. pumping or expressing milk in anyway will just keep the flow coming.
