VICODIN DURING PREGNANCY...

posted 8th Aug
So my friend is 32 weeks pregnant and she has been taking vicodin for a while now, for pain. Shes had back problems and cysts for years now. But i was just concerned that its affecting the baby..she hasnt let her Dr know that shes takin the pills. Im afraid her baby is going to be born with problems. Even if she quits taking the medication now, im afraid the baby can come out with problems from withdrawl. If she quits now, is there a chance the baby will be ok? Has anyone had expericence with this or known anyone who has had this experience? Please i need advice so i can talk to my friend!!!

As long as she is not abusing it and taking is as directed, she will be fine. It's considered safe in pregnancy if you don't abuse it.

I dont know how many pills a day she's taking, but I took them throughout my pregnancy for my migraines and back pain. They were given to me from the dr, I still can't believe those are ok to use compared to other things, but I get horrible migraines and I needed SOMETHING. Anyway I would suggest she stop taking them now, the sooner she stops the easier it will be onthe baby. I stopped at about 28 weeks, the dr never told me when or if I even had to stop I just felt it was safer considering time was winding down, and he came out perfectly fine.

No, she isnt abusing it. Thank God. So the baby should be ok? But she should stop taking it right? I mean thats my opinion.

She hasen't told her DOCTOR?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???
So these are illegal street drugs? I've heard quite a few ladies having been ok taking vicodin while preggo BUT not unless is doc prescribed(sp?)

If it is street vicodin, that awful! And she NEEDS to let her doc know straight away!!!!

It's bad to take anything that may potentially harm an unborn baby, but I do have a friend whose OB has her on Vicodin to help with pain during her pregnancy. She broke her hip a few years ago, and it has bothered her through her last pregnancy and now this one it's even worse.

However if your friend can quit, she should. At this stage, it's uncertain what withdrawal will do to the baby. There's a chance it could be fine. There's a chance it could into distress. There's a chance she goes into labor. Maybe a mixture of the above. She should definitely talk to her OB about it, but the doctor who's prescribing it sure should know by now if she's pregnant...

They had to prescribe that to me my last pregnancy for a cyst problem. Apparently while the placenta was growing the baby was feeding off of a cyst and I went to the ER w/ terrible cramps that made me throw up.

OMG tell her to stop!! If being pregnant wouldn't make her switch pain killers it sounds like she has a problem and wont admit it. Exsesaly if she has never told her doctor, her doctor needs to know those kinds of thinks. It sounds like she just doesn't want to give up her pain killers and isn't thinking of her child.

well, this is just from my experience, and Im no doctor, so take it as it is, but I was put on vicodin (actually the generic brand of vicodin, but still the same thing) by my O/B when I was about 30 weeks along, for intense back pain. I didnt even go through the whole bottle. To the point, my doctor said that in measured doses its okay.

In your friends case, if she has been taking it the whole time she has been pregnant, then it may actually be UNsafe for her to get off of it. That is what my O/B said. It may actually cause problems if she stops taking it.

However, its my opinion that your friend should have let her doctor know that she is on vicodin! what if delivery time comes around and they start giving her other pain meds? mixing those with vicodin may not be safe either! So IMO, you should tell you friend that she needs to let her O/B know about her intake of medication, asap.

Hope that helps!

okay, i just read through the previous posts...just wanted to say something, of course its just my opinion....

if she does decide to get off of it, please tell her to talk to her doctor first, in case something does go wrong. I hate seeing stuff like "omg tell her to stop right away!" that is NOT good advice, pregnant or not. Drugs and medications can really mess with some people and going "cold turkey" is not always the best option.

again, JMO...

i agree because the body (and the baby) are already depenedent on the drug.

Im on percocets.........and loratabs. And the dtr says its fine. If shes not abusing em she'll be ok.
Everyone has different thoughts on this I know.
But no one is a dtr themselves........so they really dont know.
She should be ok.
Its not the end of the world for her or the baby. The baby will be fine.
I asked my dtr the same thing.
