What behaviors will result in your children being taken into

posted 7th Aug
I completed an internship and am currently emplyed with the Children's Division in my state; we are most notoriously known for taking protective custody of children outside of all the other good we do. I am starting this post because I am interested in starting a research project onwhat the public percieveswould constitutetaking protective custody of children. I am looking into doing this research in the near future to explore creating a betterrelationship between the division and the public aswell as creating a better reputationforthe division.THIS IS JUST A PILOT RUN TO SEE HOW PEOPLE RESPOND SOI CAN LOOKINTO WHAT TYPEOFRESEARCH METHODI WOULD USE. NONE OF YOUR INFORMATION IS BEING USED IN RESEARCH!!!!!! So please, feel free to respond but trynot to respond to each others responses.

You're asking what we think should qualify a child to be removed?

Physical neglect and physical abuse. That's about it. Anything else is subjective, and children should not be removed because people disagree with the way children are being raised.

I would throw in emotional neglect and emotional abuse as well...it can deteriorate one's sanity over time.

Agreed. but what consitutes abuse to youmight simply be"discipline" to another. So where would the line be?

While I understand it's harmful (trust me, I understand) that's very difficult to prove. Would they just take the child's word for it? How would they prove that the emotional abuse was taking place? If it could be proven, I'm for it, but it falls under the category of subjectivity for me.

I haven't looked into it, but I would assume that some behavioral/emotional disorders can manifest from both emotional neglect and abuse. So, one place to start is looking at students labeled as EBD in the public school system (b/c to become labeled as such requires a doc's concurrence).

I also question whether removing the child is necessarily going to be in the best interest? I'm just going by my case here, but my father was very emotionally neglectful and abusive. I suffer from borderline personality disorder, largely due to him. However, I loved my mother dearly and being removed from my home because of my father's conduct, I believe, would have been much worse for me, because I would have been removed from the one parent I loved more than anything and placed with strangers.

In some cases, it's probably for the best, but certainly not in all cases.

Like always, a very informative and sensible answer.

I completely agree. I don't always agree with the ways of the CPS, they take little things and blow them out of proportion . But abuse can't always be seen, sometimes its just felt. For example i felt like i was neglected, not physically but just in part emotionally and part just the fact that I never felt like I was supported or had a shoulder to cry on. Is that qualified as a reason to take a child out of their family? Honestly in my opinion it is. With fists, anger is shown. With words, emotion is expressed . But what happens when nothing is expressed, shared, and anything that is important is ignored?

Maybe I should clarify (Im getting a lot of answers from people I knew would have informed responses)... Im looking forspecific parental behaviors, i.e. drug abuse, corporal punishment, inflicting bruises, driving with children not seat belted in.... Im not lookinga"right" answer or the reasons children are taken into custody, just what people believe. So if you thinkCPS can blow thigns out of porportion, what types of things are they?

*******behaviors can also be unintentional... (no food in home, dirty house, homelessness)

While I disagree with corporal punishment, I don't think it's a reason to remove children unless it crosses the line into abuse. I don't think drugs should ever be a reason to remove children, unless the drugs are being abused to the point that it causes parental negligence (not properly feeding, clothing, caring for the children). Unless the children are in direct danger, I don't think CPS should intervene.

So what are the actual reasons a child is removed?

Aside from the obvious....i mean....i see homeless people with children all the time....yet CPS was called on me when i became homeless...i actually live in an RV....i was there a whole 4 days before a lady from CPS showed up....they said someone told them we were living in unsanitary conditions etc.

Keep in mind we earlier in the season went camping and had no running water no toilet and only a campfire to cook with....we have electricity, a toilet and running water where we are....so why the need for CPS to show up for such a stupid reason?

BTW....when the lady looked at the inside of the RV she was shocked that anyone had called in the first place.
