Babies & TV

posted 7th Aug
Okay so I was thinking of something. Now I know that you should never but any child in front of a TV for a long period of time. But just for visual stimulation purposes, my 3 month old daughter LOVES to sit in her boppy seat and watch her daddy play Halo 3 and Bioshock on his xbox 360 & HD TV with all the nice pretty colors, after she has gotten plenty of time with mama. Do you think that some TV time is good for babies? Like the variations of colors ?

Of course I know that babies get stimulation from everything around them anyway, but I think it would also help her focus on one thing and concentrate?

lol sorry if this was pointless, but i thought that maybe I'd get some different opinions. I really do see both sides of it though, like some TV is good stimulation for them, however no more than an hour should they be in front of the tv, the rest of it should be bonding time.

What do you think about this? TV time for young babies for the sake of more visual stimulation or not?

We plan on playing the Baby Einstin DVD's for our son. At least it's some what educational. But, my son will watch TV with me. Not for long obviously, but he just gets so excited.

yeah as long as its not all they do, i dont think it's bad. but once they can start doing more, they need to stay active and not substitute activity with tv. tv can cause bad habits in young children, and they are hard to break. but i think some tv is fine. but we dont have cable or anything, we only watch movies, but i like it this way because i can control more of what she sees on tv. we only buy movies like veggie tales and blues clues for her.

Bah! 15 minutes? Haha

Those DVD's run all day in my house. He doesn't watch them all day, but they are always on. Even when he is napping...LOL

I'm sick of them!

It has not been proven to be benificial - but when they are older it has been proven to lower attention spans among things... Babys have been around a wee bit longer then TV's, I'd bet to say they turn out just fine without that "stimulation".

I dont think any tv is good for babies. In a study I read baby einstin was the worst on the list. I do think it has an impact on their speach. My daughter does not watch tv. one of my sisters also does not put tv on for her son. My older sister lets her son and her 2 daughters when they were yonger watch all her children have had speach problems. My neice also lets her son watch tv he also has speach problems. My daughter and my other sisters child (the one that does not watch tv) are both above where they should be in speach. I have now just let my 19 mo olddaughter watch tv but it is only on a long plane ride or a long car ride more then 3 hrs. She seats rear facing still so itgives her something to do on a longcarride.

Landon loves to dance to CMT...he could be in the other room, but if he hears music on, he comes running. He shakes his little butt, and spins around...makes my day

Aiden sat and watched sesame street for about 15 min this morning while I was getting ready for work. Not something I'll let him do all the time but when I need to have a few min to do something and thats all that will keep his attention, why not?
