re: Birth certificate..what to do?!

So since I'm on medicaid and not married if my boyfriend and father of my child were to sign the birth certificate they'd go after him for child support when they dont need to since we live together? and make him pay medical bills? Doesn't make any sense to me

Doesn't make sense but that is what they do, at least in Ohio. They determine that the father is legally responsible for the child's medical bills and not the state. They also go after support on your behalf and since he is on the birth certificate they don't need your permission to do so. The nice part about being in the system.

Thats what i was about to say. I had the medical card and wic when I first had my daughter and the only time that child support came in to play was when I went to try to get food stamps, years later.

They will try to make you go after child support, but they can't to do it without your permission. With out the fathers signature then they have no one to assign responsblity too and they require the mother to provide the information for them. Most girls that I know that the father isn't on the birth certificate for just claim they were drunk a lot and don't know who the father is. That way they can keep their medical and not piss the dad off.

seems like an invasion of my rights. If we live together and share half the bills and such theres no reason to go after him for child support. And I dont see the point of having the baby on medicaid if they are going to make him pay the bills anyway. I've never heard of any of this.

well he has nothing to do with me. and doesnt seem like he cares about the baby. i told him that i went to L&D today and he told me he didnt care. so im pretty sure hes not gonna do shit. this family lawer told me not to put him on there cuz it will be harder for him to get custoy SP? of him. hes a dead beat he's lazy doesnt have a job or anything! he gets a check for 1100 each month from being in foster care before he was 18 and she said if he doesnt have a job that they will take it right from that check.

It must be different from state to state. We live in california and my fiancee signed the birth certificate for our son and I was on medi-cal and we were living together, and they do not go after him for child support. I have to choose to file child support against him, but they cant make you.

lol yeah well i have no idea what to believe and they're just so convinced that if he signs it then things will get messed up and all this stuff..but i would think things would change if we were married but since we aren't, i'm still considered "single" so i don't see how signing the birth c matters.

I believe thats the way it is here in Utah. Ive never heard of them going after child support without your consent or even medical bills when medicaid covers it all.

Yea I thought it was the same everywhere but I guess not. I don't understand how they could go after the father for child support if the mother is not filing for it. I do know that if you try to go on welfare or public assistance after you have the baby if you don't live with the father then they will try to make you file for child support or they will deny you because that's what happened to my friend.

Medicaid ALWAYS has a legal right to go after the father to get their money back if he is maing good money - sometimes they do not do it but they DO have that right!
