To VBAC Or Not To VBAC

To VBAC Or Not To VBAC

posted 6th Aug
I know that alot of doctors are against it. I was wondering what are your personal opinions on this subject. Would you have one??? If you have what are the complications???

What are the benefits of a VBAC?

The benefits of a VBAC compared to a C-section include:
  • Avoiding another scar on your uterus. This is important if you are planning on a future pregnancy-the more scars on the uterus, the greater the chance of problems with a later pregnancy.
  • Less pain after delivery.
  • Fewer days in the hospital and a shorter recovery at home.
  • A lower risk of infection.
  • A more active role for you and your birthing partner in the birth of your child.

What are the risks of VBAC?

The most serious risk of a VBAC is that a C-section scar could come open during . This is very rare, but when it does happen, it can be very serious for both the mother and the baby. The risk that a scar will tear open is very low during VBAC when you have just one low cesarean scar and your labor is not started with medicine. This risk is why VBAC is only offered by hospitals that can do a rapid emergency C-section.

If you have a trial of labor and need to have a C-section, your risk of infection is slightly higher than if you just had a C-section.

I'm actually hoping to try a VBAC next time, preferably a home birth VBAC, but we'll see how things go next time around. I figure if you can do it safely and you really want to, why not give it a try?

My doctor has agreed to it. I trust her completely. She provided that there is a risk, but it is very minimal. Some doctors over exaggerate the risk because it's more expensive for you to have a C-section than to deliver naturally. And they only work for the money. But for her (my doctor), it's a passion.

My sister just had a baby. She wanted to try for a VBAC, but the Doctor she was seeing said no. So she switched to a Midwife and gave birth just fine and with no complications.

Thats what I was wondering. My sis had a little boy before she got pregnant with her daughter. This was like 3 months after she had my nephew by c-section.

i think if it possible you should always try for a vaginal birth. i know csections happen for all kinds of reasons, butif vaginal birth is an option, i think it's always wortha try. and if it ends in a csection anyway, ooh well, at least you tried. but it is something for the dr. and mama to discuss the risks and benefits. my friend had a because her son was breech and the dr told her before she even had the baby that she is a good candidate for a vbac because of the circumstances her csection was under. her sister on the other hand had a csection with her first baby because the way her spine and pelvis is shaped the first baby got stuck on her hip bone and she had a long long painful labor(mostly due to the midwifes bad jusdgement and tellign her she was fine to keep pushing, when she WASNT fine and should have had a csection hours before that, or at least some kind of intervention to get the baby unstuck). but now with her second she chose another csection because the chances of that happenign again are very very high, and she didnt want to go through what she did with the first baby. so i think all circumstances are different, and you shoudl do what feels best for you and you situation.

With time, the risk is supposed to decrease, because your body has time to heal and the scar tissue, depending on where it is, usually has more time to, I guess you can say get strong enough that it wouldn't rip/tear.

I want to have a VBAC the next time. When I found out I had to get a c-section I was so dissapointed. I felt like I didnt have her, that they just took her.

Why do so many people think that doctors make more money off a c-section?? It is not the doctor who makes the extra money-it is the hospital for things like supplies, operating room time/staff,etc. The "extra" amount the doctor makes is actually very minimal. I believe I read it is only about $200-$300 more.

I have had(in order)an unplanned c-section,VBAC and a planned c-section. My VBAC expereience was wonderful but it was in 2000,and many hospitals have changed there policies and procedures regarding VBACs since then. I had hoped and planned to have another VBAC this time and that changed at the very end. I would highly reccomend attemptting a VBAC. My birthing expereince with mine was great and my recovery time was very minimal.

When I had my son (my 2nd) I had him vaginally. Even though he was only 20 weeks old (which I am sure made it a hell of a lot easier) and I did not tear I did end up with a pretty bad case of cervicitis (sp?) from the trauma the labor and delivery caused to my body. I had no complications after the c-section and fully intend to have another one when I give birth again.

I'm going for a VBAC this time. My doc is totally supportive. He said since my c-section with my first was because offetal distress, that the chances of delivering vaginally are only five percent less than a woman who had not had a previous c-section. Plus, my husband and I want to have six children, I really don't want to have to have that many c-sections! This is only number 2.
