Reading..

posted 5th Aug
Do you read? Ya know, like books lol? Not magazines, big books, novels, all those! I may sound dumb and uneducated but no, I do not read lol. I've actually only ever read 2 books on my own, other than being forced to at least skim through books in school because I was required to do so for an assignment. Oh, and those 2 books I read were the 1st two Harry Potters lol.

I work inside a Starbucks and my manager loves to read, she probably read 1-2 books a week...a freind of hers who also works at Target (the Starbucks I work in, is inside a Target) loves to read as well...they were going on and on about different books, and the other lady has an 8 yr old son who loves to read as well! And he is already going through lots and lots of books! (which I think is awesome by the way!)

anyways, I know HOW to read, I just don't...my parents never read to me, and I basicaly never got into it. I read to Jacob though, well at least for as long as he'll let me lol. Do you think if you are an avid reader, you are generally smart? Do you think most successful people are book worms?

I consider myself damned smart lol, I love school and do exceptionally well in school, even to this day. I still don't read. I think I'd rather watch I Love Money on VH1...or Maury hahaha lol! Am I better off reading lol?

I just thought about it, because I think of avid readers as super successful, and really smart, but these two people of whom I'm speaking of, both work at Target and they are middle aged. Nothing wrong with that if that's how they make their living, but I should be starting nursing school in January and chances are, I will probably make more money than them...so in that aspect, I will be more successful..and I kind of detest reading lol..

do you read? can you read? how important is it really? lol silly discussion, but discuss away!

(wanted to clarify that I think it is SUPER imoportant to know how to read, my thing is on how often do you read for leisure?)

when i am on a break from school or whatever i read a romance book a night. i love them. right now i am unable to do so b/c of my son, he distracts me. but i am pretty fast at reading and can finish a fairly long book in just 2 or so hours. i have loved to read since i was little and my parents used to have to make me go outside. i would rather read than do almost anything else. i find it very enjoyable. i will read almost any kind of book or magazine but i love romance novels.

I'm not sure how important is to everyday life really... I mean, I've loved reading since I was 4 years old... by 5th grade my 2 favorite books were Gone With the Wind and Great Expectations... my hubby on the other hand? He's doing well if he gets through a motorcycle magazine, and I would never consider myself "smarter" than he is... though there have been many instances where I have had to explain what certain words meant just because he isn't used to hearing them or seeing them used in context...

I hate reading when it's assigned. I'm a college student and most of the stuff that we are made to read is totally boring! So I skim through it and half-ass it just to get through the assignment with a decent grade. However, I do enjoy a good book when I choose to read just for fun. I don't have much time for it though, like I wish I did... I probably only get through a few books a year, outside of school....

I'm in the process of reading "What to expect when you're expecting" and the last book I read was "Taking charge of your fertility". Prior to that and excluding the books I read to my son, I couldn't even begin to tell you. I don't have the time to give something that much attention. I have started alot of books but never finished them and now I don't even remember what they were about. I read alot of books when I was younger (re: NO RESPONSIBILITES) but magazines are about as good as it gets for me. lol =} I work w/ 4 bookworms...always exchanging books and having little "book club" chats. I think it's great for them but I just don't have the time or patience. I consider myself smart. I did well in school. I did not go to college and I am 27 years old and I am the division manager of a bank. Anyway, I read all day long...emails, bills, babygaga posts...lol

I'm probably a nerd, I like to read for information. I don't really like fiction books, I like nonfiction books that have to do with research. (like birth, potty training, breastfeeding, etc. - that's basically what I'm currently reading). Though I don't consider myself really smart, I do consider myself well informed.

OKay I LOVE to read, I did great in school, 4 points ALL the way, I start college next month, 4 yrs late but better late than never but I dont read as much as I used to, babies tend not to give you alot of free time! But as it stands right now, I am aSAHM who doesnt have much inlife, but am I "less smart" no, but is reading why I am smarter? Maybe in Litature and Writing, it helps my spelling too,but in general, I say probably NOT the reason you are successful or not is reading! I know for a fact that my grandfather, never went past 4th grade in school, is one of the SMARTEST men i know, and I have NEVER actually seen him read a book, and he is a successful person with NO education, I think a persons "will" makes them who they are, not reading books, but this is just MO

I, personally love to read books. I consider myself to be a relatively smart person, although I am lacking in motivation. I quit high school my sr. year and finally got my GED after the birth of my second child. Yes, I am not a successful businesswoman, just a stay at home mommy, but I still love to read and I love to read to my children.

I like to read (though I don't read quite as much now that I have a baby).

As I sit here and think about the people I know who read vs the people I know who don't read, I would say that in general, the people who read are more articulate and successful (among other things) than the non-readers.

I definitely want my kids to enjoy reading for pleasure.

Before I was pregnant, and during high school (I was grounded nearly 3 years..) I read constantly. I would finish a book at least every two days, usually earlier. I find myself at least decently intelligent. Everyone I know tells me I am really intelligent, but that's their opinion.

While having the ability to read is a necessity, liking to read is not necessarily a factor in determining intelligence. I know many people who don't read and put their brain cells to good use (   ), but on the other hand, I know people who don't read and are not the brightest crayons in the box.

I do read to my daughter daily though- even if she's only 6 weeks old, as my mother read to me every day from the day I was born, and I grew up loving books, and reading. I feel that at least reading to children is important, whether it is the IKEA catalog, a cookbook, or Moby Dick.

Quoting cassondrahumphrey:“ when i am on a break from school or whatever i read a romance book a night. i love them. right now i ... [snip!] ... do almost anything else. i find it very enjoyable. i will read almost any kind of book or magazine but i love romance novels.”

I also read super fast, and i retain everything, but i have to be "interested" in the book before I can read it, after the first couple pages, I dont like it, I will neer pick it up again!

ON a lighter note, DH who never reads suggested that i read a book named SWAN SONG, I saw the book thought, "WTF,there is NO way he read this"
Dh does good if he read the mac and cheese instructions, his attention span is so short, we are talking 900 pages of twisting hard to follow book, but he was able to tell me abouut everything in the book as i read it, so i KNOW he read it, I think alot of it depends on the KIND of books you read!

BTW I HIGHLY suggest reading Swan Song, yes its long and a HARD read but its worth it!

I freaking love reading. My mom always had me read and at school it was really pushed on us. When I was in first grade, all I remember doing was reading.

I think I have a higher vocabulary because of reading. I'm always learning new words. I don't look down on people who don't read or think they're not smart.

I don't think it has anything to do with being successful.

I LOVE reading. There's no possible way I could ever count how many books I've read in my lifetime. I've been an avid book reader ever since I can remember. I don't think it necessarily makes you more intelligent but I think it does widen your vocabulary, improve your spelling, and improve your grammar.

I used to be a really big "nerd" and all I ever wanted to do was read. I am a really fast reader because of it (I finished the last Harry Potter in one day). I love literature, as goofy as that sounds lol. I am constantly looking for new novels to read, I've read everything in our house twice or more haha.

I LOVE reading. I think it's extremely important and the most useful and powerful tool available to self-educate. Think of all the unknowns that it has the potential to expose one to. It's incredible. Addtionally, reading promotes better verbal and comprehension tools which I think are vital to becoming an intelligent, articulate and well-rounded person. Reading books has taught me more than any school ever has.
