Will they clean him up?

posted 5th Aug
Okay, I know this is going to sound ridiculous and maybe even shallow, but after I give birth, what is the process then? Push him out, hand him up? Or push him out, cut the cord, wrap him, hand him over? Will they clean him off? Im really freaked out by the thought of having a gooey vagina fresh newborn thrown at me (okay yeah, I watched the damn youtube vids!). Do I have to request that he be wiped off before I hold him? I know a lot of you are going to say I wont care becuase Ill just want to hold him, but looking down at a vernix covered newborn doesnt fit well into my love at first sight theory!

I thought I didn't want them to hand me my fresh fromt he womb baby but they thought he wasn't breathing and had to check him then cleaned him up a bit.  After that, I felt bad because I would rather them just hand him to me right away.  Things might change.

You can ask them to clean him off before giving him to you.

For all 4 of mine, the baby came out, Dr. handed it up, nurse started to clean it off while I was holding it, and Doc was in the downstairs taking care of the rest.

they had a towel layed on my belly and chest and laid my daughter on me right after she came out. Then they dried her off while she was on my chest. I got to hold her for a couple minutes and then they took her and weighed her and cleaned her up more and did another apgar score. then they wrapped her and gave her right back

You will love your baby at first site no matter what she looks like! I promise!! The first moments after giving birth are so elating and emotional, vernix will be the last thing you're thinking about. I used to be worried when I was pregnant that I wasn't going to think my baby was cute, but the moment I laid eyes on him I burst into tears and couldn't imagine loving anything more.

The nurses asked me before I went into labor and checked it on the chart. Then they asked again before I pushed. You aren't shallow. I chose to have her cord cut, then cleaned off at the station, THEN handed to me. I mean of course I wanted to hold her, but I still wanted her cleaned.

Well I didnt want that to happen either but I really didnt care when she came out I wanted to see her face so badly and i didnt want anyone taking her away from me once I got her in my arms. I held her while her father cut the cord and after holding her for a while they dried her off and everything.

Put it in your birth plan that you want her cleaned and let your dr know.   Its not shallow at all.
