Washing BAby Clothes???

posted 21st Mar '07
My cousin has a newborn baby and she is very particular, well she says that I suppose to wash all of my baby clothes(brand new ones) b4 he wear b4 the baby is able to wear them. Is that true, or has anyone else heard of this, My bestfriends grandma also washed all of her baby's clothes but I just figured it was al old folk tale. Havent heard of this until now.

I'm planning on washing mine, but that's because I wash my own clothes before I wear them too. But I don't believe all that stuff about special detergent or anything. I use unsented anyway because I have eczema.

It's probably a good idea. And you're supposed to use special baby detergent like Dreft because regular detergent can be hard on their skin. I don't think anything horrible will happen if you don't wash them first but I pretty sure I will anyway.

yes it is reccomended that you wash all of their clothes before they wear them... and an unsented or Dreft detergent is good because their skin is so sensitive....

i washed all min first epecially if you get anything from a consignment store! but yea you never know who touched them or what happened while they were being shipped... as kids get older too you don't know how many kids have tried them on before yours so i would deff always wash clothes before wearing them or letting your kids wear them

I've heard that chemicals and things the clothes have come into contact with throughout the manufacturing and shipping process can cause allergic reactions or irritate the baby's skin, plus a lot of people coming into the store and picking them up and what not or if someone before you bought the item and had to return it for some reason. you just don't know what the clothes have come into contact with before you buy them.

You do have to wash the baby clothes most especially if they are new because the baby's skin is very sensitive and might get irritated if the clothes he or she is wearing was not washed and also baby clothes have different detergent

It's true... When I worked at an 'un named store' *LOL* we used to have to air out some of the boxes before we could empty them kuz they smelt so bad...   Especially anything denim, or with a screen on it...

yeah I worked at another *unnamed store* (though, could be the same one..lol. Sounds like their thing) and we were told to take back any baby clothes that APPEARED to have not been worn. Basically, if they had the tags still on them. The thing is with that though, how many people try stuff on their kids and don't bother taking the tag off til they know if it fits or not?!

So you never know if those clothes went home to a less than sanitary home or had another baby in em even for a short period of time!

I washed all of ours, except for a few things that I'm not sure if we'll need or keep. We aren't using special detergent- just regular Arm and Hammer that we use, and fabric softener- the one thing we are doing is making sure all her clothes are washed the same way in the same stuff so that if she does seem to have an irritation to it we will know what to switch.
