lying

posted 3rd Aug
at what age did your child begin to lie? my toddler has started lying this week. at first i thought it was a fluke but she has done it every night this week. when we put her to bed at night, we alwayschange her diaper, brush her teeth, read a book, turn out the light, and lay in bed with her until she goes to sleep. the past week when we turn out the light, she will start yelling a list of things she wants. the first two nights we tried to do them, but when we brought her back downstairs to *get Milk*, *Eat* or *Change you* she would go strait for her toys or the tv and say no to what she asked for. after the first two nights we didnt bring her back downstairs, we just brought whatever up to her room and then she refused them and cried. i have no idea what to do and was hoping it would be a few more years before i had to deal with the lying..... when did your children start??? she is 21 months.

I wouldn't call that lying
but playing you because she wants attention maybe
Lying would be did you hit him
and she says no, when you watched her hit him

I think it's more of a case of trying to find any possible way of getting out of bed, then purposely lying. In which case,I think ALL kids do it at some point. My daughter started fighting her bedtime routine at about the same age.

so what should i do then?? we let her stay up pretty late as is, and she doenst nap or anything. she wakes up at 830am and goes to bed around 900pm. if anything id like to put her to bed earlier, im so worn out at the end of the day. i wish i had her energy!

I dont think its actually lying. I mean i know what you are saying, she says she wasnts something and doesnt but i wouldnt consider it lying. My daughter started telling actual lies (like story telling) right after turing 2 yrs i think.

Maybe you need to remind her of the rules of bedtime. When it is almost bedtime start telling her "1 hour til bedtime" "30 minutes until bedtime" "10 minutes until bedtime" "2 minutes until bedtime" And while you are telling her how long she has until bedtime remind her of the rules and tell her that if she wants to get a drink or whatever then now is the time to do it. As you are changing her and brushing her teeth keep reminding her of the rules and even have her repeat them back to you. Or if you have "special" plans for the next day then tell her about them and tell her that means she has to go to sleep. If she asks you for something while she should be in bed, then refuse and remind her of the bedtime rules.

That is what i have been doing with my daughter and it has helped sooo much! Good luck!

You could always go with Super Nanny's approach to bedtime routine.
Make sure she is clean, fed, happy, and read her a story. Turn off the light and close the door. She'll come out a few times, but stick with putting her straight back to bed. No giving in. If you know she's not hungry, wet, etc... then it won't hurt her to be made to stay in bed. They say the more attention you give them, the more the will want.

She could be just doing it for attention
She might be scared with the new baby here she won't get anymore attention so she might be trying to soak it all up right now

That is a very good reason that she might be acting like that.
