Time to introduce the potty?

posted 3rd Aug
There are so many mixed opinions all over about when to introduce the potty, and the most common thing I hear is to look for certain signs. Well I'm not sure if I should still wait, or if I should start introducing Emma to the potty (not really using it, but making it a common sight now.)

At the current moment she knows how to take her pants off (we're working on putting them back on), she tells me when she has to go by saying "Go Go" and then proceeding to pee or poop in her diaper, after telling me she has to "Go Go" she either disappears to an area close to the bathroom, or turns her back on me, grabs something to hold on to while squatting to go, and shows a genuine interest in the toilet.

Also, is it easier to train on a small potty before the real thing? I wanted to train Emma on the regular toilet with a child seat since we live in a condo, so disposal of baby-potty waste and cleaning of the potty would be a bit difficult, but I'm willing to go the extra mile if it'll be easier. I've heard some say it's great to sit them on the potty while you go too, so they get the idea. However Emma already knows what happens in the potty, because when I sit down on it she asks me "Mama Go Go?"

If she is able to tell you that she has to go~ before she actually does it, it's time to potty train~ we started out w/ the little potty, she would go all by herself then tell us when she was done~ after she got the hang of it we started to use the big potty~ that way if they have to go potty in public, she won't be so frightened by the big potty. Good Luck!

ETA: I also tried the little toilet seat that sits on the big potty, but my daughter always found a way to pee all over the place~ it was actually easier without. I also don't understand what living in a condo hads to do with it~ if she goes in the little potty you dump it in the toilet & flush it~ then wash it out w/ hot soapy water.

I'm potty training right now, and I think you should do what works best for them. I bought Bella the cutest pink potty in the world! Well..... she hates it! But she loves her Dora potty seat that sits on the regular toilet, so thats what we use. She will tell us pee pee and we take her and she pees in the potty and is wanting to wipe herself and everything! We use tons of praise and also give her a M&M when she pees on the potty. She is going to be 19 mos next Sunday. We first started introducing the potty at 14 mos, but we were not consistent. I felt like it was all hit and miss since she wouldn't tell us when she had to go and all. So, around 17 mos she started saying ewwww when she had went potty, but she still did not recognize before she had to go. That has just started this week. Other than nap time and bed time, she has been fairly accident free for the past 5 days! We are using pull ups now, but I can't wait to get her some big girl panties!

Time for the potty pants.

My vote:
1. Use the real toliet w/ an adapter seat for her small booty
2. Ask her often "go go?"
3. If she has a poo/pee pattern, take her into the bathroom around that time
4. Don't use pull-ups at night...if someone can shit and piss in the day no probs, why allow them to mess themselves at night?

I just started to potty train Hunter... He can't tell me he has to go in words but by his actions. He will pull at his diaper ( or sometimes even take it off) and I'll ask him if he has to go potty and he runs to the bathroom . We bought him a little potty, it's much easier because he can get onto it by himself. It only took him till the 3rd night of sitting on the potty that he went.

Thank you very much for all your input ladies. I had figured it was probably time (which brings a tear to my eyes) but I just wanted a little bit more input from people who have been there.

As far as what having a condo has to do with it, I should have explained a little more. We are very, very limited on space (to the point where we have to put our books and DVDs in boxes and put them in our storage closet because there's no room, and we can barely fit little rugs in our bathrooms to keep the floors from getting wet. I also know nothing about the baby potties, and figured they'd need a good rinsing after use and such would be easier with a hose which we have no access to. If they can be easily washed in a sink though, then I'll start with that for now, but I do know I want Emma to be comfortable going on the regular toilet too for outings to the store and such.

Again thank you very much!!
