help!! breast pump question

posted 3rd Aug
I just bought a breast pump. I wanna use it for night feedings cause I'm exhausted and someone else can help me out once a day.

Am I supposed to measure how much I give her or do I just let her eat as long as she wants until she's full?

AND

Is it likely that she won't like the bottle since she's used to breastfeeding?

Just pump as much as you can into a bottle and let her feed until she's satisfied. She might get a bit more than usual since a bottle flows faster, but not enough to really make a difference. If she starts spitting up or vomitting afterward, then start giving her less.

She may refuse the bottle, there are some that do. Another thing to think about is she may refuse the breast after getting the bottle. My son did fine however...until now, but that's because he's teething. But up until now, switching between the two has been fine - he's 5 1/2 months old now.

However, I will caution you that if you do not pump at night when she is feeding, then you run the risk of your supply being lowered. I always, always, always pumped whenever my son ate if I was not nursing him to prevent this from happening.

it's quite possible that she won't take the bottle, btut not impossible for her to do it

make sure someone else gives her the bottle, and it'll be best that she doesn't even see you or get the chance to smell you.

Honestly though, I don't know if you'll find it's worth the hassle. If your baby is less than 4-6 weeks, I don't recommend skipping a feeding or using a pump as your body is still trying to establish your milk supply. Plus, you'll have to wash the pump parts. And then there is always risk of nipple confusion.

It was always a deal in our house that I nurse, so my hubby got up, changed her diaper, and I nursed. He'd get me juice, milk or water and a snack if I wanted it before going back to bed.

Good luck!

she might have some problems with the bottle at first, its normal... she will eat more from the bottle than the breast, b/c its much easier. I would say start off with an ounce at a time (its a pain in the butt for you to have to measure it out ounce by ounce, but its so much better than wasting it (it is liquid gold!)) or start with 2 ounces... I can't feed my daughter a bottle, someone else has to do it... good luck!!!

oh yeah, and I would only put 2 oz in a bottle, if she seems to want more, give her an ounce at a time. If you have 6 oz of milk, and put it in the bottle, and she only drinks 2, then you have to through out the rest of the milk in the bottle. I don't know about you, but I've cried when I threw out my milk once because my fridge at work stopped working and my milk went back. It's liquid gold.

I figure it's the best I can do. I at least feel better that he has to get up, even if he gets to go back to sleep five minutes later.

But he was also good about letting me snooze, even with two of them, during the day if needed.

You DO? I didn't know this!! I've been solely expressing milk (my son won't latch) and I will warm a bottle, and if he doesn't finish it, put it back in the fridge and re-warm, and even put newer fresh milk on it that I've just pumped sometimes. I never keep any milk past 12 hours, so I thought I was safe. Should I stop doing this?

technically, it's not safe because bacteria from their mouth can get into the bottle and grow. It's the same with leftover formula. If it's not used in an hour, you dump it.

Lol...I swear, babies need to come with a manual. I had no idea! But I know what you mean about breastmilk being liquid gold. I have such a low supply to begin with, that I'm soo paranoid that I'm going to spill some of my milk after I pump on the way to the fridge. The day that happens I'm gonna be so sad!

I left my milk in my fridge on friday at work. When I got to work on Monday, my fridge wasn't working and my milk had spoiled. A whole day's worth. I cried for 20 minutes. I have never had the best supply for pumping. If I'm with my daughter, I'm fine, but pumping my boobs suck. I worked damn hard so that she didn't have a drop of formula at all So it hurt ven more to dump out that 8 oz

Aww, I would be crying too! 8 oz. would take me 2 or 3 pumping sessions to supply, so I know how precious it is!
