So I Want To Be An OB/GYN...

posted 2nd Aug
Hate your OBGYN?? Love her like a sister??? I want to hear your stories!!!

WHY YOU ASK??? Well, I eventually I would love to fulfill my 4th grade dream of becoming and OB/GYN (yes... in 4th grade I wanted to be an OBGYN).

I would love to hear some of your experiences with your OBs, both good and bad, so I can start shaping what kind of doctor I will be.

What did he/she do that you loved? What did he/she do that really pissed you off (even if you didn't say anything about it)?? ETC.

Oh yes. Definitely a must. Do some docs actually not do that? Mine always has. But maybe she's just nice?

Oh, and I think people like a bit of humor in that situation...it kind of breaks the ice. My OBGYN is a guy that was in Vietnam....he is one of the coolest guys EVER! Always sweet and funny! Not to mention, if I have a very upsetting problem he will actually call me personally to find out how I am (he does this for a lot of people). It makes them feel less like a number on a chart. Is that a good start?   Good luck in persuing your dream! Every woman needs a wonderful OBGYN!

I love my OB b/c ?I've been seeing him for years since I was 15. He always seems to take a personal interest and asks ?s about things that are going on with me and my family, even if its just in passing. He never hurries me or makes me feel stupid for asking an obviously stupid ?...although when I was doing Dr rotation before i was diagnosed GD and had to stick with just my one doc...i swear to god the one other doc i saw i would have loved to have slapped. He talked the entire time we were hearing teh Hb, and before he came in the room he kept us waiting for damn near 30 mins without saying we'll be right there someone will be with you shortly etc...and then he acted all cocky and shit and wouldn't shut up...and made me feel like such a low person for asking a few ?s. I didn't like him much.

I like my OB because he asked me when I first went in.
"Do you want me to tell you what we're doing or would you rather just get it over with as soon as possible?"

Always offer U/S pics.

Jokes are fun in good taste if you're good at reading people like that.

And never show that you think a question is off the wall/stupid. I hated that about my first OB.

That's a great start. In there a line where the humor needs to stop, or where it starts to become innapropriate?

One of the jokes that I LOVED when we first found out we were pregnant was " Alright we're going to put a condom on this guy(The vag U/s) so he doesn't get you pregnant."

I think that's a very good point. Every question needs to be just as valid as any other.

How did your docs react if he/she DIDN'T KNOW the answer to a question? Also, was there anythign they did/didn't do that made you worry about your pregnancies, or reproductive health, that was completely unnecessary?

I used to dream of being an OB and running a birth center...however with the restrictions put on OBs by hospitals and malpractice insurance I realize I could never attend women the way I want to. I also think that with the current state of the maternity care system I would be forced to violate my conscience during training. So...I am becoming a home birth midwife.

I would judge the person like some one else said and just have a few you tell everyone...haha! Like when you sew some one up you can what my doc said; "How does it feel to be a virgin again?" Then he commented at my 6 week pp check up that whoever worked on me did a great job and he couldn't even tell I had a baby! White lies are the best sometime

If there was anything that he honestly didn't know he told me straight up and that he would have answer for me and that he would give me a call. He always called that same day or the next day.

The one thing that I didn't like about the whole ordeal is that when I called his call line after hours it took about 20 minutes to get back to me-- which is understand able-- and I told him I had some symptoms and he told me to get to the hospital now and basically hung up on me.

With no further explanation after.

I worry about the same things. But at the same time I feel like I could realy make a difference in the mainstream healthcare system for women who don't REALISE some of the things I have uncovered in my research. Patients pick up on things like doctors who would be more than happy to schedule c-sections, and that makes them more likely to do these things that I may consider unethical. Now, if someone really WANTED a certain treatment that I didn't necessarily agree with, I would certainly still treat them, but I would make sure they knew the full extent and implications of their decisions before going forward. That kind of information may or may not be as readily available at some OB/GYNs offices.
